The Dallas Split

The first thing to know is that a letter to someone at Clements does not go to Amarillo. TDCJ scans personal mail centrally, and the scanning happens at a Digital Mail Processing Center in Dallas, about 350 miles from the prison.

The center scans each item in colour and delivers it to his tablet, normally within about three business days. People without a tablet receive printed copies instead. The originals are held for 90 days and then destroyed, unless you enclose a self-addressed stamped envelope to have yours returned. If a photo or a card matters to you, that envelope is the only way to get it back.

Two details decide whether the letter arrives at all. It needs his full commitment name, meaning the name TDCJ holds on record rather than the one he goes by, and his eight-digit TDCJ number. Mail missing either comes back to you. The TDCJ locator shows both, and copying them straight across is safer than typing from memory.

What the Unit Still Receives Directly

The Dallas routing covers personal mail and nothing else. A whole category of post still goes to the prison itself:

• Publisher-direct books and magazines
• Government checks

Anything requiring his signature goes to the unit addressed care of the Law Library. The unit address is:

Check the street number before you post any of that. The Nathaniel J. Neal Unit sits on the same 592-acre site and the same road, at 9055 Spur 591, under the same Amarillo 79107 ZIP prefix. Legal mail sent to the wrong number on the same road is a real risk here in a way it is not at a prison standing on its own.

If an older letter or a court record gave you a Neal address at 9055, confirm the current unit on the TDCJ locator or by calling Clements on (806) 381-7080 before you send anything that matters.

Cards, Photos and Publisher-Direct Books

Photos go through Dallas with everything else personal, and they reach him scanned in colour on his tablet, or printed if he does not have one. Greeting cards go the same way.

Books are the one place TDCJ contradicts itself. The prose on its own family contact page says books and magazines go to the unit, while the routing table on the same page lists books under digital mail. Before posting a book, confirm which route it should take on (806) 381-7080. Books sent direct from a publisher or a retailer go to the unit at 9601 Spur 591.
