Mount Olive Correctional Complex opened in 1995 and is West Virginia’s only maximum security prison. It replaced the West Virginia Penitentiary in Moundsville, which had operated since 1866 and was known for its harsh conditions. Mount Olive was built with modern correctional design, including individual control rooms and direct supervision of housing units. The old Moundsville penitentiary, now a National Historic Landmark, operates as a museum and paranormal tourism site. Mount Olive sits in the New River Gorge region of Fayette County, one of West Virginia’s most scenic areas.
