The facility’s weekday schedule doesn’t list any visiting window, so plan your trip for a weekend day or a federal holiday. Getting Onto Maxwell Air Force Base

This is the part of visiting FPC Montgomery that’s genuinely different from most prisons: the camp is located on an active military installation, so you have to enter the base itself before you can reach the visitation center. Visitors must use the Maxwell Boulevard Gate. No other gate on the base is permitted for visitor entry.

Directions depend on which direction you’re coming from:

• From I-65 North: take the Herron Street Exit toward Maxwell Air Force Base, continue to Maxwell Boulevard (the second traffic light), turn left, and travel about 1 mile to the Maxwell Boulevard entrance.
• From I-65 South: take the Clay Street Exit toward Maxwell Air Force Base, turn left one block past the first traffic light, turn left again at the next light, continue to Maxwell Boulevard, turn left, and travel about 1 mile to the entrance.

Bring a valid photo ID for yourself, since you’ll need to clear base entry procedures before you even reach the camp.

The Shuttle Process

Once you’re on base, you don’t drive directly to the camp. Visitors park in designated areas near the Maxwell AFB visitor’s center and are transported by shuttle bus between the visitor’s center and FPC Montgomery’s own visitation center. When your visit ends, the same shuttle system carries you back to the Maxwell Boulevard Gate. Build extra time into your trip for this step, especially the first time you visit, since it adds a stop you won’t find at a typical standalone prison.

Getting Approved to Visit

As at other BOP facilities, the process starts with the incarcerated person, not with you. He submits your name to his Unit Team, which runs a background check before adding you to his approved visiting list. This research didn’t turn up a specific, named visitor application form number for FPC Montgomery, so ask him to start this process through his Unit Team as soon as you know you want to visit, since background checks take time.

General Federal Visiting Rules That Likely Apply

Beyond the confirmed hours and gate process, BOP facilities nationwide share a common visiting framework. Expect the following, and confirm any specifics with the facility:

• Approval comes first. Every visitor needs to be on the incarcerated person’s approved visiting list before showing up.
• Photo ID is required, both for base entry and for the visitation check-in itself.

What’s Not Allowed

Bringing drugs, alcohol, weapons, or unauthorized electronic devices onto Maxwell Air Force Base or into FPC Montgomery’s visitation area violates both federal prison policy and military installation rules, and can lead to criminal charges. Don’t pass anything to or from an incarcerated person during a visit unless staff have specifically approved it in advance. The facility’s handbook also notes that inmates may not give to or receive anything from another inmate, or from any civilian or military worker on Maxwell or Gunter Air Force Base, a rule worth keeping in mind given how closely the camp’s population interacts with the base’s workforce.
