Since September 15, 2025, personal mail for people at Fresno County Jail does not go to Fresno. It goes to a processing centre in Las Vegas, where it is opened and scanned, and the person reads it on a screen. The Sheriff’s Office is unusually clear about the requirements, and equally clear about the consequence: an envelope missing the booking number, the Jail Identification number or the facility code 1900 is returned. Legal mail and books follow an entirely different address, in Fresno.

Every element of that matters. The 1900 is the facility code, and it is what tells the processing centre which jail the letter belongs to. The booking number and Jail Identification number are what tell it which person.
Both numbers come from the person’s record in the county roster. Write them down when you look the person up, because you will need them for a deposit as well.
Fresno County contracted the handling of personal inmate mail to Pigeonly Corrections, effective September 15, 2025. Mail is received in Las Vegas, opened, inspected and scanned, and the scanned copy is what the person in custody reads.
This is now the standard arrangement in a lot of California counties. The reason given is contraband, particularly paper soaked in synthetic drugs, which cannot be detected reliably by hand.
The Sheriff’s Office is specific here, and specific is worth quoting rather than paraphrasing loosely: mail that does not carry the booking number, the Jail Identification number and the facility code 1900 is returned.
Notice what that says and what it does not. It is a rule about missing identifiers, not a general statement that everything sent to the jail’s street address comes back. If you have those three numbers on the envelope and the Las Vegas address on the front, the letter goes through.
The scanned copy is permanent. The paper is not.
Originals are held for 30 days and then destroyed. Inside that window, the county will return a parcel to the sender on request, which is the part worth knowing if you have sent something you cannot replace.
The practical rule: never post the only copy of anything. A child’s drawing, a photograph from a funeral, the last picture of a grandparent. Post a copy, keep the original, and if you have already sent something irreplaceable, act inside the 30 days rather than after.
These do not go to Las Vegas.

Books are the other reason families need this address. A book sent to the Las Vegas processing centre is not going to be scanned into a tablet, so send it to Fresno.
