Iowa’s whole prison system was running 28.8 percent over capacity on September 9, 2026, with 9,003 people held against a total capacity of 6,990. North Central carries a disproportionate share of that. Its 488 people against a working capacity of 245 is roughly double, and no other Iowa prison comes close: the next worst is the reception centre at Coralville, at 1,009 against 585. What makes North Central’s figure unusual is how few of those people are in medical or segregation status. Just 18, against 197 at Newton and 153 at Fort Madison. This is a minimum-security prison that is very full and not much else.
