Every other Iowa prison leaves families to phone and ask what to wear, what to carry and how often they can come. Newton wrote it down. Its visiting rules document is the only one of its kind in the state, and it answers questions the department does not answer anywhere else, including the one that matters most before you book: how many visits a week your person is actually entitled to, which depends on their housing level. There are also two separate schedules here, because Newton is two facilities on one site.
Work out which building first. The schedules do not overlap and the sites are a mile apart on the same road.
Newton Correctional Facility, the medium-security prison, runs three fixed in-person slots on both Saturday and Sunday: 8:00 to 10:00, 10:45 to 12:45, and 1:30 to 3:30.
The Correctional Release Center, at 1203 South 60th Avenue West, runs one window on both days: 8:00 AM to 3:30 PM.
Video differs too. NCF offers video on Sunday and Saturday 8:00 AM to 3:00 PM, and Monday and Friday 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM. The Correctional Release Center offers video Monday and Friday, 2:30 PM to 7:30 PM only.
One rule cuts across all of it: no in-person visitor is admitted after 1:30 PM.
Newton is the only Iowa prison that publishes this, and it changes what a family can plan around. It depends on your person’s housing level.

The visiting week runs Tuesday through the following Monday, so a Saturday and the Sunday after it fall in the same week rather than different ones.
If you do not know your person’s level, ask them. It is not in Iowa’s offender search.
None of the above is available until you are on the approved list.

A decision takes up to 30 days, and Iowa tells the incarcerated person rather than you. The Central Visiting Authority help line is 319-385-9511.
Iowa’s statewide policy allows immediate family plus six other individuals or groups. Newton’s own document says only four friends may be on the list at a time. Both are official and they disagree, so ask which applies before you promise anyone a visit.
Changed your name? Newton sends you to Mount Pleasant on 319-385-9511 rather than handling it locally.
Visits are scheduled in Ameelio Connect, and everyone aged 13 and over needs their own account.
Newton’s page states that Ameelio Connect is only available on iPhones, iPads and Androids, and is not currently available on computers or laptops. Iowa’s statewide Ameelio page says the opposite, that it works on computers and laptops too.
Both are official Iowa Department of Corrections pages. We cannot reconcile them, so plan on using a phone or tablet here, which is the assumption that works under either version.

A special visit needs arranging at least three working days in advance and has to be approved by the Security Director.
No other Iowa prison publishes this. Read it before you dress.
Refused:
Required: undergarments.
Conditional: spandex, yoga pants and leggings need a shirt covering front and back. Newton notes that V-neck shirts usually will not work and to think t-shirt style.
Outerwear all gets hung up before you enter the visit room: coats, zip hoodies, scarves, gloves, hats and umbrellas. What you may wear in is a pull-over sweatshirt, a sweater with or without buttons, a blazer, or a jogging jacket that matches jogging trousers.
Almost nothing. Lockers take the rest.
Into the visit room: your Debitek card, your locker key, and necessary prescription medication such as nitroglycerin or an inhaler. Inhalers are surrendered to the visit room desk.
Into the locker: cell phone, watch, wallet, personal keys, handkerchiefs and bandanas, metal hairpins. Newton asks that phones be switched off before they go in.
The Debitek card, for the vending machines, works in a way worth knowing before you arrive: you need a $5 bill to start, the machine takes $2 for the card itself, leaving a $3 balance, and after that you can add ones, fives, tens or twenties.
Bringing a baby? Newton lists exactly what is allowed: two diapers, two plastic bottles with any powder formula pre-mixed before you arrive, one pacifier, one small teething toy, one small blanket, one small container of wipes or a Ziploc bag, one infant carrier seat, and one clear sippy cup.
This one surprises people and costs them time.
A visitor who needs the bathroom during a visit is returned to the lobby, and may come back afterwards only if time allows, having repeated the entire entrance procedure including the pat search. No extra visit time is given back.
The same applies to changing a nappy. Plan around it, particularly with a small child.
Newton publishes vehicle rules too: windows up, doors locked, and no alcohol, weapons, animals or people left in the vehicle. Tools in the back of a pickup have to be in a locked toolbox.
Getting there: take Interstate 80 toward Newton, leave at Exit 164, go south on Iowa Highway 14 for about 3.6 miles, turn east on 60th Avenue West, and after 1.2 miles turn into the parking lot.
If you cannot pass through a metal detector because of a wheelchair, oxygen, a pacemaker or an implant, Newton asks you to bring a note from your doctor so it can go on your file. Do that once and it is handled from then on.
Photo ID is required from age 16, presented to the Lobby Officer. Note that is younger than the 18 Iowa uses for in-person ID statewide, and matches the 16 it uses for video visits.
