The Published Schedule
| Type | Days | Hours |
|---|
| In person | Saturday and Sunday | 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM |
| Video | Monday, Tuesday and Friday | 8:30 AM to 3:30 PM |
Both are marked reservations in the Ameelio app only, and Iowa charges nothing for either.
Why the Tuesday Slot Is Worth Having
Most Iowa prisons run video on Monday and Friday. North Central adds Tuesday, and it is the only one of the nine that does.
That is more useful than an extra day sounds. Monday and Friday video slots across the state compete for the same families, and a Tuesday morning is the least contested slot in Iowa’s system. For a family in Sioux City, Ames or Council Bluffs, none of which is a short drive from Calhoun County, an extra weekday is what makes contact regular rather than occasional.
Everyone aged 16 and over shows valid photo identification at the start of a video visit: a state driver’s licence, another state photo ID, a current passport, or a military ID for active service. You supply the device and the connection.
The Four Things North Central Leaves Out
This matters more here than at most Iowa prisons, so it is worth setting out plainly rather than burying at the bottom.
No visitor cap. Clarinda publishes three, Mount Pleasant two, the women’s prison five. North Central publishes nothing. Iowa’s statewide policy allows three adult visitors with children counted against the room’s seating capacity, and that is the figure to work from until somebody here says otherwise.
No visit length. Several Iowa prisons publish a two-hour block. This one gives an opening and closing time and nothing about how the day inside it is divided.
No phone booking route. Clarinda opens this to any family, and several prisons open it to approved attorneys and Department of Human Services visitors. North Central publishes no alternative to the app at all.
No dress code, locker rule, late arrival policy or holiday schedule.
None of that means the rules do not exist. It means they exist inside the building and are not published, and that a family who assumes another Iowa prison’s arrangement will sometimes be wrong. 712-297-7521 is the number.
Approval Comes From Mount Pleasant
Nothing above is available until you are on the approved visiting list, and the office that decides is at the opposite end of the state.
Form OP-MTV-04 F-1, the Iowa Department of Corrections Visitor Application, revised August 13, 2026. Every adult files their own and children go on a parent or guardian’s form. Iowa does not accept it electronically. Print it, sign it and post it:
Mount Pleasant Correctional Facility
Attn: Central Records
1200 E. Washington St.
Mount Pleasant, IA 52641
One Centralized Visiting Authority serves all nine prisons, which is why an application to visit Rockwell City travels roughly 250 miles southeast. The help line is 319-385-9511 and the fax is 319-385-2891.
A decision takes up to 30 days, and Iowa notifies the incarcerated person rather than you.
Alongside the basics it asks for previous last names, your Social Security number, your spouse’s name, your address with county, and for each child under 18 their name, date of birth, Social Security number, sex and relationship.
Then the history: pending charges, all arrests including juvenile ones, every misdemeanour and felony conviction, deferred judgments, any past supervision with its ID number and discharge date, whether you have been involved in the illegal use of drugs, any work or volunteering for the department, and every visiting list you have ever been on.
Iowa’s instruction on the form: do not leave blanks or provide false information, because that will cause the application to be denied.
Approval, Denial and the Appeal Window
Policy allows immediate family, six other individuals or groups who are friends or extended family, and minor children supervised by a parent or legal guardian.
A minor visiting with an approved adult who is not their parent needs a notarized letter of consent, received by the Central Visiting Authority in advance.
Outside immediate family, a visitor may be on only one incarcerated person’s list. A child turning 18 has 30 days to file their own application.
Disqualified: anyone under correctional supervision, under indictment, involved in escape or contraband, anyone who falsified an application, and victims and their households. A convicted felon who is not immediate family generally needs three years of successful community adjustment.
A denial means six months before reapplying unless you appeal, and an appeal must be postmarked within 45 days of the denial letter on form OP-MTV-04 F-3A.
Iowa’s Search Notice, and NCCF’s Version of It
Every Iowa prison page carries the same warning about searches. North Central’s is the odd one out in a small way, labelled Reminder where the other eight say Note, and ending with a stray double full stop.
The substance is statewide. All visitors are subject to search on entry, which may include a pat down by a member of staff of the same sex, metal detectors, electronic ion scanners, other electronic devices, or visual searches. Refusing means entry to the visiting room is denied. Current government-issued photo identification is required.
Where a child is present during your search, you may keep them with you or hand them to staff. Iowa’s policy is blunt about the third option: if a visitor refuses to leave children with staff and does not want them present during the search, the visit is terminated. When a child is searched, a parent or legal guardian is in the room along with two staff members.
What You May and May Not Take In
Iowa’s statewide list of baby items: two diapers, a clear non-glass baby bottle with milk or formula only, an empty clear sippy cup, one baby blanket, one burp cloth, and one factory-sealed clear plastic container of baby food.
Never allowed: weapons including pocket knives, cell phones, any personal device with an independent internet connection such as a smart watch with a SIM card, medications other than genuine necessities such as nitro, tools, cameras, pagers, and tobacco or lighters.
Service animals, meaning dogs and miniature horses only, must be registered in Iowa’s central visiting database with a photograph, which is stored in the Ameelio app. Staff may ask only whether the animal is required because of a disability and what work it has been trained to perform, and may inspect it visually without touching it.
Iowa’s Dress Rules, Applied Here
North Central publishes no clothing list, so Iowa’s statewide entrance procedures are what govern:
- all visitors wear shoes
- no miniskirts, no shorts above the knee, no muscle shirts, no see-through clothing, no halter tops
- nothing with slogans, pictures or words intended to deprecate race, sex or cultural values
- coats, hats, gloves and sunglasses may have to be removed, and a medical need for sunglasses has to be backed by a prescription
Iowa says institutional procedure addresses shorts for children under 12. North Central does not publish its version, so that is a question for the phone.
Ion Scan Consequences
Applied statewide, and printed on the back of the visitor application.
| Occurrence | Consequence |
|---|
| First | Next two visiting days, and future visits may be non-contact |
| Second | Seven visiting days |
| Third | Fifteen visiting days |
| Fourth | Thirty visiting days, plus 180 days non-contact |
| Refusing the scan | Fifteen calendar days |
Ion scanners detect traces, and traces move from hands, bags and car seats. Wash your hands before you go in.
Six Questions for 712-297-7521
- How many visitors are allowed at one visit?
- How long does a visit last here?
- How many visits a week is he allowed?
- Are visits contact or through glass?
- If I cannot use the app, is there any other way to book?
- Is there anything I should not wear, and what about the children?
