Phone Calls and Video Visits at Northpoint Training Center

Calls and video visits run through Securus. Here is how to set up your account and what to expect.

Overview

Phone calls and video visits at Northpoint Training Center go through Securus Technologies, the provider used by Kentucky DOC. Calls are outbound only: the inmate places the call to you, you do not call in. To receive calls, set up a Securus account at securustech.net and add funds so the call connects.

Video visits are also available through Securus, Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Each session is 25 minutes and must be scheduled at least 48 hours in advance.

Setting Up Your Securus Account

Before the first call can happen, you need a Securus account. Go to securustech.net and create a free account. Add your phone number as a contact number and load funds into the account.

The inmate also needs to register on Securus from inside the facility and add you to their approved contact list. Both steps have to happen before a call can go through. If the inmate has already been at Northpoint for a while, they likely have Securus set up already. Ask them directly.

How Phone Calls Work

The inmate places a call from a phone at the facility. The call comes to your number. You accept it, and the call connects. Calls are paid for using the funds in your Securus account.

If your account has no funds, the call will not connect. Make sure you have a balance before you expect a call, especially in the early days when you are still figuring out the timing.

Phone calls are outbound only. You cannot call in. The only exception is an emergency, such as a death in the family, where you can call the facility at (859) 239-7012. Staff will decide whether to pass the information to the inmate. Do not call for routine matters.

All calls are monitored and recorded. This is standard across Kentucky DOC facilities. Do not share anything on a call that you would not want reviewed.

How Video Visits Work

Video visits are scheduled through your Securus account online. Log in, find Northpoint Training Center, and choose an available time slot. Visits are Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Each session is 25 minutes.

Schedule at least 48 hours in advance. Last-minute requests are not accepted. The inmate must also be registered on Securus and the visit must be approved before it appears on both sides.

The name and contact information in your Securus account must match what KDOC has on file. If there is a mismatch, the visit may not be approved. Contact the facility at [email protected] or (859) 239-7012 if you run into issues.

Inmates in general population can have up to three video visits per week. These are separate from their four monthly in-person visits, so you can use both.

Keeping Costs Manageable

Securus allows you to set up prepaid accounts and manage your balance online. You can add funds by credit or debit card through the website or the Securus app. Keeping a modest balance and topping it up as needed is easier than letting it run out mid-call.

If the inmate has commissary funds, they can also use their account balance to pay for calls, depending on how the facility has configured access. Ask the inmate which method works best for your situation.

Messaging and Tablets

Securus also provides tablet devices to inmates at many Kentucky DOC facilities. These tablets allow people to send messages, purchase media, and in some cases video call directly from the unit. Check with the inmate to confirm whether tablets are available at Northpoint and what services are active.
