BOP Inmate Locator, bop.gov/inmateloc/

The Federal Bureau of Prisons maintains a single database for all federal inmates at every BOP facility. Go to bop.gov/inmateloc/ and search by:

  • Name. Use the exact committed name, the name on their legal documents at sentencing. Nicknames or shortened names will not return results.
  • Register number. The 8-digit BOP number assigned to each inmate (format: XXXXX-XXX)

The result will show their current facility, race, sex, age, and projected release date. If they are at USP Pollock, their facility code will show as POL.

USP Pollock vs. FCI Pollock

Both USP Pollock and FCI Pollock share the same physical address at 1000 Airbase Road, Pollock, Louisiana. They are two separate prisons on the same campus. The BOP locator is the only reliable way to know which one your person is at.

FacilityBOP CodeSecurity LevelPhone
USP PollockPOLHigh security(318) 561-5300
FCI PollockPOMMedium security(318) 765-4400

If your person was recently transferred between the two, the locator will show the updated code once processing is complete (typically 24 to 48 hours).

What Is a Register Number?

Every federal inmate is assigned an 8-digit register number when they enter BOP custody. It is required for sending money, mail, and email. If you do not have it, searching by full committed name in the locator will display it once you find the right person.

Why Someone Might Not Appear

  • Recent transfer. Processing after a transfer typically takes 24 to 48 hours. The BOP locator updates regularly but not instantly.
  • Name mismatch. The locator uses the inmate’s committed name. If you search a nickname, maiden name, or different spelling, you may not find them.
  • Pre-trial or holdover. Inmates awaiting sentencing or in transit may be at a detention center rather than a sentenced facility.
  • Released. If someone completed their sentence, they will not appear as currently incarcerated.

When to Call the Facility

If the person does not appear in the BOP locator after 48 hours and you believe they are at USP Pollock, call the facility at (318) 561-5300. Have their full committed name and register number ready.
