How to Get on the Approved Visitor List

Getting approved is an inmate-initiated process. It does not happen automatically.

  1. The inmate contacts their Unit Counselor and provides your name, address, date of birth, and your relationship to them.
  2. BOP mails you a Visitor Information Form (BP-629) to complete.
  3. You fill it out and return it to the facility.
  4. BOP runs an NCIC criminal background check on every prospective visitor.
  5. The inmate receives notification of whether you were approved or denied.

Plan several weeks for this process. Do not make travel arrangements until you have confirmed approval.

Last entry is at 2:00 PM. If you arrive after 2:00 PM, you will not be processed in. There are no exceptions. Allow extra time for parking, ID check, and entry procedures.

What to Wear

USP Pollock enforces a strict dress code for all visitors. The following are not allowed:

  • Hats or head coverings (except for documented religious or medical reasons)
  • Open-toe shoes, sandals, or open-back shoes
  • Sleeveless tops, tank tops, or halter tops
  • Low-cut tops or blouses
  • Shorts or miniskirts
  • Capri pants or clothing that cuts off mid-calf
  • Spandex or tight-fitting clothing
  • Transparent or see-through clothing
  • Overalls
  • Clothing in khaki or grey tones (similar to inmate uniforms)
  • Clothing in camouflage or law-enforcement-style patterns

Dresses must fall at or below the knee. Female visitors must wear a bra. When in doubt, dress conservatively in solid, dark, or non-khaki colors.

What You Can Bring In

  • Up to $20 in coins only. For vending machines in the visiting area. No bills. No debit or credit cards.
  • Government-issued photo ID. Driver’s license, state ID, current passport, or military ID. All adults must show ID.
  • For infants: a clear bag with basic necessities (diapers, wipes, formula). Check with the facility for current limits.
  • Prescription medication in the original labeled bottle, only the amount needed for the visit. Staff will hold it at entry.

Leave everything else in your car: phone, purse, wallet, keys, food, gum, jewelry (other than simple wedding bands or small stud earrings).

How the Visit Works

All visitors go through a metal detector and may be subject to a pat-down search. Children may also be searched. Visits take place in a supervised visiting room. Brief physical contact (a hug or handshake at the start and end of the visit) may be permitted based on the inmate’s security status.
