Franklin County Jail Inmate Search. Confirm Custody and Where Someone Is Held

A 39-bed jail with no searchable roster, where overflow means someone booked here may be held in another county.

Overview

Franklin County doesn’t publish a searchable inmate roster the way larger jails do. The Sheriff’s Office posts two separate public logs on franklincounty.maine.gov instead: a Jail Intakes page with booking photos, names, dates, and a booking sheet PDF for each person, and a Jail Releases page listing names and exact release times by day. Neither is a search box, so you read through the log itself. There’s a second thing worth knowing before you start looking: the jail is rated for only 39 people, and when it fills up, Franklin County pays to board people at other jails, Somerset County Jail in Madison among them. An arrest in Franklin County doesn’t mean the person is being held in Farmington. A call to (207) 778-3032 settles where they actually are.

Q

Is there an online inmate search for Franklin County Jail?

Not a searchable one. Franklin County publishes a Jail Intakes log with booking photos, names, and booking sheets, plus a separate Jail Releases log, both on its own website. You read through them by date instead of typing a name into a search box. To confirm anything, call the jail at (207) 778-3032.

Q

Why might my family member not be at Franklin County Jail even after they were arrested there?

The jail is rated for only 39 people. Lewiston Sun Journal reporting from September 2025 described it as over capacity for two straight months, with Sheriff Scott Nichols Sr. pointing to more people held on high bail and about 90% of the population awaiting trial. At that point 11 people were boarded at Somerset County Jail in Madison for $90 a day each, roughly $6,930 a week. By June 2026 the number was down to 2, though the rate had risen to $95 or more per day. Someone missing from the intake log may be in custody elsewhere rather than released. Call (207) 778-3032 and staff can tell you where.

Q

How current is the Jail Intakes log?

It's posted periodically, not in real time, so an arrest from earlier today may not be up yet. Check back later in the day before assuming someone wasn't booked.

Q

How do I find out when someone was released?

The Jail Releases page on the Franklin County Sheriff's Office website lists names by date along with the exact time of release. That's the page to check when someone has disappeared from the intake log.

Q

Can I use Maine's statewide inmate search for someone at Franklin County Jail?

No. The Maine Department of Corrections search tracks its own prisons and its own probation and parole cases. Franklin County runs this jail on its own, so a person awaiting trial or serving a county sentence appears in the county's logs, or in the logs of whichever jail is boarding them, and not in the state tool.

Q

Is Franklin County building a new jail?

Not yet. Franklin, Androscoggin, and Oxford counties are studying whether to build one shared regional jail to address overcrowding and rising boarding costs. As of mid-2026 this is a feasibility study with a hired consultant, so it doesn't change where anyone is held today.

Q

How do I post bail for someone at Franklin County Jail?

Come in person to the Franklin County Detention Center with the inmate's name, the bail amount in cash, and the Bail Commissioner's fee in cash. Plan on at least an hour while staff verify the amount and reach a Bail Commissioner.

Q

Once I confirm someone is at Franklin County Jail, can I immediately visit or send money?

Not immediately. Visits require a phone call at least 24 hours ahead, and you need to be on the inmate's approved visitor list first. Money has to be mailed as a money order or bank check. See the visitation and send-money guides for the full process.
