Overview

Maine Correctional Center gives families two ways to fund a resident’s account: MDOC’s own online Money Deposit Service, which posts without a hold period, or a mailed money order or check, which posts within 3 business days of arriving at the facility’s Business Office but is then held 14 calendar days before the resident can spend it. Both options fund the same two accounts, trust and phone, each capped at $100 per day and $200 per week. Cash can never be mailed or dropped off in person.

Quick Facts

  • Fastest option: MDOC's online Money Deposit Service, run in partnership with InforME, using a Visa or Mastercard, with no hold period.
  • Deposit limit: $100 per day and $200 per week to the trust account, and separately $100 per day and $200 per week to the phone account.
  • Alternative: mail a U.S. Postal money order, a cashier's or official check from a Maine bank, a money order from a Maine bank, or a government check (including a tribal check).
  • Mailed funds post to the resident's account within 3 business days of the Business Office receiving them, then sit on a 14-calendar-day hold before the resident can use them.
  • Every mailed money order or check needs the resident's full legal name, middle initial, and MDOC number if you know it, plus your own full name and address, or it will not be processed.
  • Money cannot be dropped off for a resident in person.
  • Cash cannot be sent to a resident by mail or any other method.
  • You need the resident's MDOC number and date of birth to complete an online deposit.

Two Ways to Send Money

Maine Correctional Center, like every MDOC facility, does not use a private trust-deposit company such as JPay, TouchPay, or Access Corrections. Families have two options instead:

  1. MDOC’s online Money Deposit Service, run in partnership with InforME. This is the faster option and carries no hold period on funds paid by credit or debit card.
  2. A mailed money order or check, sent directly to the resident. This option is slower, since mailed funds sit on a 14-day hold after posting, but it’s a real alternative if you don’t have a card or prefer not to pay online.

Option 1. Deposit Online

To make an online deposit, you’ll need the resident’s MDOC number, their date of birth, and a valid Visa or Mastercard. You can fund two separate accounts:

  1. The trust (general) account, which the resident uses for commissary purchases.
  2. The phone account, which funds the resident’s own outgoing calls (see the phone calls guide for how this differs from funding an account to receive their calls).

Each account is capped at $100 per day and $200 per week. If you’re funding both accounts the same day, MDOC requires both deposits to happen in a single transaction. Funds made online are non-refundable, so double-check the resident’s MDOC number and date of birth before you submit.

Option 2. Mail a Money Order or Check

MCC accepts the following mailed instruments, made out to the resident:

  • U.S. Postal money orders
  • Cashier’s checks or official checks from a Maine bank
  • Money orders from a Maine bank
  • Government checks, including tribal checks

Every money order or check must be legible and list the resident’s full name, with middle initial, and their MDOC number if you know it. It must also show your full name and address as the sender. Missing any of this means the payment will not be processed.

Once the Business Office receives it, your payment posts to the resident’s account within 3 business days, but the funds are then held for 14 calendar days from the date they post before the resident can spend them. That’s a meaningfully longer wait than the online option, so plan ahead if the resident needs funds by a specific date.

Never Send Cash

Cash cannot be sent to a resident by mail, and money cannot be dropped off for a resident in person. If you want to add funds to a resident’s account, use the online Money Deposit Service or a mailed money order or check instead.

Why the Online Option Is Faster

MDOC recommends online transactions specifically because they post to a resident’s account without the 14-day hold that applies to mailed U.S. Postal money orders, checks, and other paper instruments. If timing matters, such as a resident needing funds before a scheduled purchase, the online deposit is the more reliable choice.

The Trust Account and the Phone Account Are Separate

Money you send doesn’t automatically split between commissary spending and phone calls. The trust account covers general purchases, while the phone account funds the resident’s own outgoing calls specifically. If you want to support both, fund both accounts, whether online in a single transaction or by mail with a note indicating how the funds should be applied.

Timing Matters More at a Reception Facility

MCC is MDOC’s primary reception facility for both men and women, which means people are classified here and then moved on, sometimes within days of arriving. That has a practical consequence for money. A mailed money order can post, sit through its 14-day hold, and become spendable at a point when the resident is no longer at MCC. Funds do follow a resident to their next MDOC facility, so nothing is lost, but the timing can leave someone without usable money during exactly the stretch they need it. If your family member arrived recently, check the resident search tool before sending anything, and lean toward the online service, since card deposits post without the hold.

Getting Help

For questions about the online Money Deposit Service itself, contact MDOC’s Corrections Webdesk at [email protected]. For technical issues with the online system, InforME’s customer support line is (207) 621-2600, or email [email protected]. For questions about a mailed money order or check, or about the Business Office generally, call Maine Correctional Center at (207) 893-7000.

The Women’s Center

Money sent to a Women’s Center resident works the same way as for MCC’s main population: the same online Money Deposit Service, the same daily and weekly caps, and the same mailed money order and check option through the facility’s Business Office. There’s no separate deposit process for the Women’s Center.

6 of 13 questions

Q

How do I send money to someone at Maine Correctional Center?

Either pay online through MDOC's Money Deposit Service using a card, or mail the resident a U.S. Postal money order, a Maine bank check or money order, or a government check. At a reception facility like MCC the online route is usually the better call, since it posts without a hold.

Send Money
Q

Does MCC use JPay, TouchPay, or a similar vendor?

No private vendor is involved. Maine handles deposits through a service MDOC runs jointly with InforME, so there's no separate commercial account to create.

Send Money
Q

How much can I deposit online at once?

Each balance has its own ceiling of $100 a day and $200 a week. Because the trust and phone accounts are counted apart from each other, a family can move up to $200 in a single day across both.

Send Money
Q

Is a mailed money order held before the resident can use it?

Yes. Mailed U.S. Postal money orders, checks, and government checks post to the account within 3 business days of the Business Office receiving them, but are then held 14 calendar days before the resident can spend them. Online deposits skip this hold.

Send Money
Q

What kinds of checks or money orders does MCC accept by mail?

U.S. Postal money orders, cashier's or official checks from a Maine bank, money orders from a Maine bank, and government checks, including tribal checks.

Send Money
Q

What information do I need to put on a mailed money order or check?

The resident's full legal name, middle initial, and MDOC number if you know it, plus your own full name and address as the sender. Missing information means it won't be processed.

Send Money
Q

Can I drop off money for a resident in person?

No, staff at Windham won't accept it. The online service and a mailed instrument are the only two ways money reaches a resident's account.

Send Money
Q

Can I mail cash to a resident?

Never, under any circumstance or by any route. Cash sent to the facility is refused.

Send Money
Q

What's the difference between the trust account and the phone account?

Two separate balances, and at a reception facility it's worth funding both deliberately. Commissary and other approved purchases come out of the trust account. Outgoing calls draw on the phone account, which is a different thing again from the account you set up on your end to receive those calls.

Send Money
Q

Should I wait to send money if my family member just arrived at MCC?

Check the resident search tool first. MCC is MDOC's main reception facility, so people are classified and moved out, sometimes within days. Deposited funds do travel with a resident to their next facility, but a mailed money order finishing its 14-day hold after they've left can leave them short at the wrong moment. An online deposit sidesteps the problem by posting immediately.

Send Money
Q

What if I want to fund both the trust account and the phone account online the same day?

Both have to go through as one transaction. Splitting them into two same-day deposits won't be accepted.

Send Money
Q

Who do I contact with a deposit problem?

For the online Money Deposit Service, email MDOC's Corrections Webdesk at [email protected], or call InforME at (207) 621-2600 for technical issues. For a mailed money order or the Business Office, call Maine Correctional Center at (207) 893-7000.

Send Money
Q

Does sending money to a Women's Center resident work differently?

No. The same online Money Deposit Service, the same daily and weekly caps, and the same mailed money order option apply to Women's Center residents.
