Step 1. Apply as an Approved Visitor

Every adult who wants to visit, including immediate family, relatives, and friends, needs an approved application on file before scheduling a visit. Get the Adult Facility Visitor Application as a print version to fill out by hand, or an electronic version to complete on a computer and print. Only one adult per application; minors are listed on that adult’s application instead of filling out their own. Sign every page, then mail the completed form to:

Use both your mailing address and your residential address on the form. Applications listing a P.O. box as the residential address will be returned. MCC processes applications in the order they’re received, so apply as early as you can.

Step 2. Wait for Clearance

MCC runs a background check for each visitor. If you’re approved, MCC emails the resident’s clearance notice. It’s the resident’s responsibility to tell you that you’ve been cleared and what times you can visit, since MDOC does not give clearance information over the phone. If you’re denied, MCC mails a written notice explaining the decision and how to become approved.

Make sure your Visitor Application lists an active, correctly spelled email address, since that’s how MCC reaches approved applicants with scheduling details.

Step 3. Schedule Your Visit Online

Once you’re cleared, schedule each specific visit through MDOC’s online visit request form. Voicemail messages can no longer be used to book a visit; the Visit Office phone line at (207) 893-7109 is for questions only, not for scheduling.

Book your visit at least 2 business days ahead. Requests submitted after 4:00 p.m. are treated as if submitted the next business day, which affects your earliest available date:

MCC’s specific visit days and times vary by housing unit and are published as a schedule graphic on the facility’s own Mail & Visitation page, which text-based tools can’t reliably extract. Check that page directly for your family member’s unit, or call (207) 893-7109 and leave a message asking for the current schedule for their specific unit.

Once your visit is scheduled, MCC sends a confirmation email along with a link to the current visit rules.

Getting There

Maine Correctional Center is at 17 Mallison Falls Road in Windham, about 9 miles from Portland’s Transportation Center (Amtrak and Concord Bus) and about 10 miles from the Portland International Jetport. There is no public transit directly to the facility. If you need help arranging a ride, staff can provide a phone for visitors to use, along with information on local taxi services.

Driving directions vary by where you’re coming from:

• From north of Exit 63 of the Maine Turnpike: take Exit 63, turn left onto US Route 202 west, follow it about 12 miles, then turn left at the traffic light where 202 meets River Road, and take the second right.
• From south of Exit 48: take Exit 48 to McDonald’s, turn right, drive about 4.5 miles, then turn left onto Mallison Falls Road.
• From Downeast Maine: follow I-95 south from Brunswick to Exit 52, get on the Maine Turnpike, follow it south to Exit 48, then follow the directions above.
• From Sanford-Springvale: follow US Route 202 east through Gorham, about 5 miles past Gorham turn right at the Little Falls Recreation area, cross State Route 237, and MCC is at the top of the hill.
• From the Route 302 corridor: follow 302 to the junction with US Route 202, follow 202 west to the traffic light, turn left onto River Road, then take the second right onto Mallison Falls Road.

Checking In and Security Screening

Bring a valid state or federally issued picture ID if you’re an adult. Minor visitors need a state or federal ID or a birth certificate. Everyone, including minor children, is subject to search before and during a visit, which can include a metal detector, a pat search, and a canine search. Anyone found trafficking contraband is suspended from visiting and may face criminal prosecution.

Inside the Visit Room

Nothing may be brought into a visit. MCC provides residents with basic hygiene items, clothing, writing paper, and envelopes, and residents can buy snacks, stamps, a daily paper, a television, and a radio through the commissary. No cameras are allowed in the visit room.

With contact visits, a resident and visitor may briefly embrace or kiss at the start and end of the visit, though open-mouth kissing isn’t allowed. You can hold hands for the rest of the visit, with both people’s hands visible at all times. Petting or sexual contact ends the visit. Unless a resident is otherwise restricted, they may hold their own minor children on their lap.

No loud or profane language. Nothing is passed between visitors and residents; tobacco is treated as contraband. Residents and visitors can’t move around the room or visit with other residents or their visitors. Residents leave any jacket or other item in the pat search room before entering, and residents are expected to be properly dressed, including a buttoned and tucked-in blue shirt.

Dress Code

Acceptable:

• Undergarments (required)
• Dress slacks, khakis, or jeans
• Skirts and dresses at knee length or longer
• Loose-fitting tops that fully cover the torso and don’t expose cleavage below the collarbone
• Cardigan-style sweaters or button-down over shirts with no pockets or zippers, worn with an undershirt, buttoned no lower than the top two buttons (all over shirts go through the x-ray machine)
• Closed-toe shoes: sneakers, boots, or dress shoes

Not acceptable:

• Shorts or short-shorts
• Tight-fitting clothing, including low-rise jeans, leggings, spandex, and yoga pants
• Boxer shorts or any exposed undergarments
• Ripped, torn, or revealing-hole clothing
• Bare midriffs, half shirts, halter tops, sleeveless tops (shoulders must be covered), low-cut or v-neck tops, tube tops, or open-back shirts
• Any hooded sweatshirt or pullover fleece
• Zippered shirts, sweaters, or long-sleeve t-shirts of any kind
• Clothing referencing gangs, drugs, sex, violence, or containing vulgar, obscene, or racial language
• Pajamas, lingerie, or see-through clothing
• Sandals, open-toed shoes, or bare feet
• Hats, headbands, or hooded clothing
• Outdoor jackets, including pullover jackets, sport coats, and suit coats
• Double-layered bottoms, such as two pairs of pants or a skirt over slacks
• Clothing resembling a uniform, including nursing scrubs, or police, postal, or utility uniforms

Dress code rules may be relaxed for children ages 0 to 10 and adults 60 and older. If a visitor’s clothing is questioned, the Visiting Desk Officer notifies the Area Sergeant, who inspects and decides whether the visit proceeds. There is no appeal.

Children at Visitation

Minors, meaning anyone under 18 unless married or emancipated by court order, can visit unless specifically prohibited. A minor visitor must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian who is themselves an approved visitor and who has listed the minor on their own application.

An approved adult who is not the child’s parent or guardian can still bring a minor, but only with the parent or guardian’s written, notarized permission and prior approval from MCC’s Chief Administrative Officer or their designee. The permission must be time-limited, commonly expiring 6 months after the first visit, and everything on it must be verifiable. An approved professional visitor from the Department of Health and Human Services may also bring a minor visitor with the same prior approval.

Once a visit starts, minor children are escorted at all times, including to the restroom. If a minor needs to leave the visit room for any reason, neither the minor nor the accompanying adult is allowed back in.

Bonding Visits

If a resident, male or female, is the parent of an infant born within 6 weeks before their incarceration began, or born during their incarceration, MDOC allows bonding visits until the infant turns 6 weeks old, as long as the resident’s visiting privileges aren’t suspended. The resident or adult visitor needs a certified copy of the infant’s birth certificate listing the resident as parent, unless the resident is the birth mother and gave birth while incarcerated. These visits use normal visit hours unless an extended or additional visit is separately approved, and the resident or visitor may breastfeed or bottle-feed. Visitors may bring in one clear plastic bottle of pre-mixed formula and a pacifier, subject to inspection.

Extended Visits for Long-Distance Families

If you live far from Windham, the resident can request a special visit through a special visit request form at the facility. MCC’s own materials are clear that most visits are not extended beyond the standard schedule, since visit length is tied to the resident’s housing unit and level system instead of a family’s travel distance.

What’s Not Allowed

Weapons or suspected weapons keep a visitor from being admitted, as does appearing to be under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Alcohol and drug possession on state property is a separate violation of state law. Passing anything between a visitor and resident, or bringing in tobacco, is treated as contraband trafficking and can lead to a visiting suspension and criminal prosecution.

The Women’s Center

The Women’s Center, an 86-bed housing unit on the same Windham campus, uses this same visitor application, the same Visit Office, and the same online scheduling system as the rest of MCC. Its published visit rules match the ones on this page. If your family member is at the Women’s Center specifically, mention that when you contact the Visit Office, since scheduling availability can differ by housing unit even though the process itself is identical.

Conduct and Visit Rules

MDOC’s statewide Prisoner Visitation Policy, Policy 21.04 (AF), governs visiting across MDOC adult facilities, including MCC. Visit rules can change without notice, and MCC’s confirmation email for a scheduled visit includes a link to whatever version is currently in effect. Confirm the person is still housed at Maine Correctional Center before you travel by checking the resident search tool, since MCC is a reception facility and residents can be transferred quickly.
