Location and Getting There
Alamance County Detention Center is located at 109 S Maple St, Graham, NC 27253, in the heart of Graham. Graham is a small city in the central Piedmont region of North Carolina, about 20 miles east of Greensboro and 25 miles west of Durham.
Street parking is available near the courthouse square. If you are traveling from out of town, several hotels are in Burlington, which is about 5 miles north of Graham.
Why Visiting Hours Are Not Posted Online
The Alamance County Sheriff’s Office does not publish visiting hours on its website. Schedules at county jails often change based on staffing levels, housing unit rotations, and facility needs. Calling ahead is the only reliable way to get accurate information.
Call (336) 570-6317 before you make the trip.
What to Ask When You Call
When you call, ask the following:
- What days and times are visits available for the housing unit the person is in? County jails often split visiting by pod or housing assignment.
- Do I need to schedule in advance, or is it walk-in?
- How many visitors are allowed at one time?
- Can children visit? If so, what do I need to bring for a minor?
- Is there a dress code?
- Are video visits available?
Write down everything they tell you. If you get different answers on different calls, ask to speak with a supervisor.
Confirm the Person Is Still There
County jails move people more often than prisons. Transfers, court appearances, bonding out, and sentence completions all happen regularly. Run the Alamance County P2C inmate roster at apps.alamance-nc.com/p2c/jailinmates.aspx the morning of your planned visit to confirm the person is still in custody.
What to Bring
Valid government-issued photo ID. This is required for every adult visitor. Bring one of the following:
- Driver’s license or state-issued ID
- U.S. Passport or Passport Card
- U.S. Military ID
Expired IDs are typically not accepted. If you do not have a current photo ID, call ahead to ask about alternatives.
Do not bring purses, cell phones, bags, or personal items into the visiting area. Leave everything in your vehicle or use any lockers provided.
What to Expect When You Arrive
County jail security screenings typically include:
- Checking your ID against a visitor list or inmate record
- Walking through a metal detector
- Possible pat-down search if the metal detector alerts
Anyone who appears to be under the influence of alcohol or drugs will not be allowed to enter and will be asked to leave the property.
Children Visiting
If you plan to bring a child, call ahead. Most county jails allow minor children to visit if accompanied by an adult, but some require the child’s birth certificate or a notarized letter from the other parent if the visiting adult is not the child’s parent.
Ask specifically when you call: Can children visit this housing unit? Do I need any paperwork for a minor?
Dress Code
While Alamance County Detention Center has not published a specific dress code, county jails in North Carolina typically require visitors to dress modestly. Common rules include:
- No clothing that resembles inmate uniforms (orange, tan, or khaki)
- No low-cut tops, crop tops, or clothing that exposes the midriff
- No shorts that fall above mid-thigh
- No clothing with offensive language or drug-related images
- Underwear must be worn
Call (336) 570-6317 to confirm whether the jail has a specific dress code before you travel.
Video Visits
Paytel, which handles phone calls at the Detention Center, also offers video visitation on some of its tablet platforms. Whether Alamance County has this enabled is unconfirmed. Call (336) 570-6317 or check paytelconnect.com to find out if video visits are an option. Video visits, if available, let family connect without traveling to Graham.
County jails typically allow brief physical contact at the start and end of a visit, such as a hug or handshake. Extended physical contact is generally not permitted. Some facilities are fully non-contact with a glass partition. Ask when you call whether visits are contact or non-contact.
What Is Not Allowed
Do not attempt to bring any of the following into the facility:
- Cell phones, cameras, or recording devices
- Weapons of any kind
- Drugs, alcohol, or tobacco products
- Food or drinks for the inmate
- Gifts, cash, or packages to hand to the inmate during a visit
Attempting to bring contraband into a jail in North Carolina is a felony. Visitors caught doing so will be arrested.
What to Do If Your Visit Is Denied
If you are denied a visit, ask the officer for the specific reason in writing if possible. Common reasons include:
- Not on the approved visitor list
- Dress code violation
- Outstanding warrants
- The person in custody is on a visit restriction as a disciplinary measure
If you believe a denial was in error, ask to speak with a supervisor or contact [email protected].
