How to Schedule a Visit

All visits are by appointment. Walk-ins are not accepted. Here’s how to book:

Online: Go to inmatesales.com. Create an account if you don’t have one, find Haywood County Detention Center, and select an available time slot. You must book at least 24 hours before the visit.

At the kiosk: Lobby kiosks labeled Visitation A are available at the Haywood County Law Enforcement Center. Use the kiosk to schedule your time slot if you’re already at the facility.

Give yourself plenty of lead time. If you wait until the day before, time slots may already be taken, especially on weekends.

What to Bring

Every adult visitor age 16 and older must bring a valid state or federal photo ID. Accepted forms include:

  • Driver’s license or state-issued ID card
  • U.S. Passport or Passport Card
  • U.S. Military ID

Children under 15 do not need ID if they are accompanied by a parent or guardian. Do not bring expired IDs. You may be turned away if your ID is expired or does not match the name on the approved visitor list.

Leave all personal items in your vehicle or secured storage: purses, bags, cell phones, cameras, pens, and paper are not allowed in the visitation area.

Visitor Limits Per Session

Only one adult and one child are allowed per visit session. If you have additional family members who want to visit, they will need to schedule separate appointment slots.

Dress Code

The following clothing is not allowed during visits at Haywood County Detention Center:

  • Tube tops
  • Tank tops
  • Shorts above mid-thigh
  • Spandex or form-fitting athletic wear
  • Bandanas

Wear modest, covered clothing. If staff considers your clothing inappropriate, you may be denied entry. A quick call to (828) 452-6768 before your visit can confirm current requirements.

Security Screening

All visitors pass through a security screening before entering the visitation area. Expect:

  • Metal detector or magnetometer screening
  • Staff verification of your photo ID
  • Confirmation of your scheduled appointment
  • Possible pat-down search at officer discretion

If you appear to be under the influence of alcohol or drugs, you will be denied entry and may be asked to leave the property.

What Is Not Allowed During Visits

The following are prohibited:

  • Bringing any item into the visitation area without prior approval
  • Passing anything to the person inside or accepting anything from them
  • Cell phones, cameras, or electronic devices in the visitation area
  • Pens or paper in the visitation area
  • Any attempt to introduce contraband into the facility

Introducing drugs, weapons, or other contraband into a correctional facility is a felony under North Carolina law. This applies to everyone on the premises, not just those who are incarcerated.

New Arrivals: Wait for Housing Assignment

If someone was just booked, they may not be available for visits right away. The facility requires that people be classified and assigned to a housing unit before visits are permitted. This process can take a day or more after booking. Call (828) 452-6768 to find out whether the person is cleared for visits before scheduling.

In-Person vs. Video Visits

The facility’s scheduling system at inmatesales.com supports both in-person and video visit formats. The official website does not specify which format is in use at any given time. Call (828) 452-6768 before booking to confirm whether your appointment will be in-person or a video session. This matters if you’re traveling from a distance.

Children Visiting

Children under 15 do not need a photo ID if they are accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. The facility allows one child per adult visitor. If the child’s parent or guardian is not the one making the visit, call (828) 452-6768 before coming to find out what documentation you need to bring.

Clergy and Attorney Visits

Clergy and attorneys typically have access outside of regular visiting hours. Contact the detention office at (828) 452-6768 or the main line at (828) 452-6666 to arrange a clergy or attorney visit. Bring professional credentials and a valid photo ID.

If Your Visit Gets Denied

If you arrive and can’t get in, ask staff for the reason. Common causes include:

  • No confirmed appointment or appointment not found
  • ID issues or expired identification
  • Not on the approved visitor list
  • Dress code violation
  • Arriving after the time slot has started

Call (828) 452-6768 to find out how to reschedule and, if needed, how to get on the approved list.

Staying in Touch Between Visits

Four visit days a week still leaves gaps. Between visits, you can:

  • Set up phone calls through CPC at cpcjail.com (see the phone calls guide)
  • Send letters and photos directly to the facility (see the mail guide)
  • Use CPC’s email and messaging service
