Pasquotank Correctional Institution opened in 1996 on Commerce Drive in Elizabeth City, the seat of Pasquotank County in the Albemarle region of northeastern North Carolina. The facility sits about 40 miles south of the Virginia border and roughly 50 miles from the northern Outer Banks. Pasquotank County takes its name from the Pasquotank River, which drains into Albemarle Sound just west of the city. The prison holds up to 896 men in Close and Minimum custody within a four-building complex that includes vocational and academic classrooms, a recreation area, a dining hall, and medical and mental health offices.
