Where to Go for Visits
This is the most important thing to know before you travel: all in-person visits happen at the Annex at 400 Grace Church Road, Salisbury, NC 28147.
The Rowan County Detention Center has two locations. The main jail is at 115 W Liberty Street. The Annex is at 400 Grace Church Road. Even if the person you are visiting is housed at the main jail on Liberty Street, you still report to the Annex for your visit. Do not go to the main jail for a visit or you will miss your time slot.
The Annex phone number is (704) 216-7900.

Visiting Hours
| Visit Type | Hours | Cost |
|---|
| On-site visit (at the Annex) | Sunday through Saturday, 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. | Free |
| Remote video visit | Sunday through Saturday, 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. | $0.30 per minute |
On-site visits are conducted through video kiosks at the Annex. You do not have contact visits. The kiosk connects you and the person inside through a live video feed.
Visit Limits
Each inmate can receive one visit per week. The visitation week runs Sunday through Saturday. A maximum of four visitors may attend the same session. If you are planning to bring multiple family members, all four can join the same scheduled visit, but that still counts as the one weekly visit for that person.
You cannot schedule a second visit in the same Sunday-to-Saturday week.
Arriving for Your Visit
Arrive at the Annex at 400 Grace Church Road at least 15 minutes before your scheduled time. The facility recommends arriving 30 minutes early to allow time for check-in and any security steps.
Visits start at the scheduled time. If you arrive after your time slot has started, the facility does not allow same-day rescheduling. You would need to book a new session at least 24 hours out.
What to Bring
Bring a valid government-issued photo ID. Acceptable documents include:
- Driver’s license or state ID card
- U.S. Passport or Passport Card
- U.S. Military ID
Do not bring purses, bags, firearms, cell phones, or cameras into the facility. Leave personal belongings in your vehicle. The facility may search you upon entry. Refusal to be searched means you will be denied entry.
Dress Code
Wear conservative, modest clothing. The facility will deny entry for inappropriate dress. Specific items that are not allowed include:
- Short-shorts or mini skirts
- Bathing suits
- Halter tops
- Revealing or see-through clothing
When in doubt, dress as you would for a government office or courthouse.
Visits for Minors
Minors must be accompanied by their legal parent or guardian. Bring documentation showing legal guardianship or your relationship to the child if staff ask for it. Call the Annex at (704) 216-7900 before your visit to confirm any current requirements for visitors under 18.
Remote Video Visits from Home
If you cannot travel to Salisbury, HomeWav lets you join a video visit from anywhere at $0.30 per minute. You still must schedule through homewav.com or by calling 1-844-394-6639 at least 24 hours in advance. The same one-visit-per-week and four-visitor limit applies to remote sessions.
Remote visits are available Sunday through Saturday, 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. They are a good option for family members who live far from Rowan County or cannot take time off work to travel during facility hours.
How to set up remote visits:
- Go to homewav.com and create an account.
- Verify your identity as directed during setup.
- Search for the person at the Rowan County Detention Center.
- Select an available remote time slot at least 24 hours in advance.
- Add funds to your HomeWav account to cover the $0.30 per minute cost.
- Join at your scheduled time from any device with a camera and internet connection.
What’s Not Allowed During Visits
- No passing of items to or from the person inside at any time
- No bringing contraband of any kind (drugs, weapons, alcohol, tobacco)
- No cell phones, cameras, or recording devices inside the facility
- No purses or bags inside the facility
- No clothing that is revealing, offensive, or otherwise violates the dress code
Introducing contraband into a correctional facility is a felony under North Carolina law.
If You Need to Cancel or Reschedule
If you need to change a visit, do so through your HomeWav account or by calling 1-844-394-6639 before your scheduled time. Same-day rescheduling is not available. You cannot reschedule after arriving late.
What to Do If the Person Is Not Found
Before making the trip to the Annex, confirm the person is still in custody at the Rowan County Detention Center. Use the inmate roster at rowancountync.policetocitizen.com/Inmates/Catalog or call the main jail at (704) 216-8770. People can be transferred, released, or moved without notice to family.
See the inmate search guide for step-by-step help with the roster.
Stay Connected Between Visits
Letters, photos, and phone calls can help you stay close during the week when visits are not scheduled. See the mail guide and phone calls guide for details.
