How the Phone System Works
Calls at Sanford Correctional Center are outbound only. The person inside dials your number from an approved phone inside the facility. You cannot call in. For the call to connect, your number must be set up on an AdvancePay or Trust/PIN Debit account with ConnectNetwork, and there must be money in the account to cover the call.
$0.10 per minute is the verified rate for NC DAC facilities through ViaPath/GTL. A 15-minute call costs $1.50 in call charges. Processing fees apply when you add money to the account.
Step 1. Set Up Your Account
You have two account options:
AdvancePay: You prepay into an account tied to your phone number. When the person calls, the charges come out of your AdvancePay balance.
Trust/PIN Debit: The money is in the person’s trust account (the same account used for commissary). When the person calls, charges come out of their trust balance.
To set up AdvancePay:
- Go to ConnectNetwork.com and create an account.
- Select “AdvancePay” and add your phone number.
- Fund the account with a credit or debit card.
- Your number is now ready to receive calls.
Or call 800-483-8314 to set up your AdvancePay account by phone.
For Trust/PIN Debit, call 888-428-1845 or set it up through ConnectNetwork.com.
Step 2. Add Money
Each time you fund your ConnectNetwork account, a processing fee applies:
- $3.00 per transaction when processed by the automated system
- $5.94 per transaction when processed by a live operator
Once money is in the account, calls can connect immediately. There is no processing delay after a deposit.
Step 3. Receive the Call
When the person inside calls your number, you will hear an automated greeting identifying the call as coming from a NC DAC facility. Follow the prompts to accept the call. If you decline or miss the call, the person will need to try again from inside the facility.
Keep an eye on your balance. When the account is close to empty, calls may be cut short. Log in to ConnectNetwork.com or call 800-483-8314 to check your balance and add money before it runs out.
Call Length and Frequency
Each call is limited to 15 minutes. After 15 minutes, the call automatically ends. The person can call back if time permits and the facility allows it. NC DAC does not publish a cap on how many calls per day or week a person at Sanford can make, but facility rules and call availability depend on schedules, programs, and phone access inside.
What Numbers Can Be Called
The person must have your phone number on their approved call list inside the facility. Numbers that are not pre-approved cannot be called. If you change your phone number, contact the facility or ask the person inside to update their approved number list.
Call Monitoring and Recording
All calls through ViaPath/GTL at NC DAC facilities are recorded and may be monitored by facility staff. Do not discuss:
- Pending criminal cases or legal strategy (use attorney calls for these)
- Anything you would not want a corrections officer to hear
- Third-party financial transactions or anything that could be misinterpreted as fraud
Calls from attorneys may be handled differently. Ask the facility at (919) 895-7000 about attorney call procedures if this applies to you.
Blocking Your Number
If you do not want to receive calls, you can block your number through ConnectNetwork. Go to ConnectNetwork.com and update your account settings, or call 800-483-8314 to block calls to your number. The person inside will then not be able to reach you at that number through the ViaPath system.
Troubleshooting Failed Calls
If calls are not going through:
- Low balance: Check your ConnectNetwork balance. A zero balance will block all calls.
- Number not on the approved list: The person inside needs to have your number on their approved call list.
- Technical issue: Call ConnectNetwork support at 877-650-4249 for help.
- Facility restriction: During lockdowns or facility-wide restrictions, phones may be unavailable. Contact (919) 895-7000 to ask if there is a current restriction.
Video Visits
If a phone call is not enough or you want face-to-face contact without making the drive to Sanford, video visits are available through Getting Out Visits. Download the app on iOS or Android or visit sso.gtlconnect.com from a computer.
Video visits can be scheduled on-demand or in advance, depending on what the facility allows. You create a free account, link your contact information, and book a session. Video visits are not a replacement for in-person visits at Sanford, but they are a good option for family members who live far away or cannot take time off work.
Messaging
ViaPath/GTL also offers a text-based messaging service in some facilities. Check ConnectNetwork.com or the Getting Out app to see if messaging is available for Sanford Correctional Center. If it is, it works like a paid email system where both sides can send short messages.
