How to Search

Go to cc.southernsoftware.com/bookingsearch/index.php?AgencyID=SurryCoNC and enter the person’s first and last name. The roster lists people currently in custody at Surry County Detention Center. The search is run by the Surry County Sheriff’s Office and is free to use.

If the name search doesn’t return results, try searching by last name only in case the first name is recorded differently.

What the Search Shows

When you find the person, the booking record typically includes:

• Full legal name
• Inmate ID number
• Booking date
• Charges or holds
• Current custody status

Save the inmate ID number. You’ll need it every time you send money, write a letter, or schedule a video visit through PayTel Connect.

Timing: When Records Appear and Disappear

The Southern Software roster is updated regularly, but it is not instant. Keep these timelines in mind:

• Newly booked inmates: It can take several hours after booking for a new record to appear. If someone was just arrested, wait and search again before calling the facility.
• Recently released: People who have been released are typically removed from the roster within 24 hours. If you cannot find someone you expected to be there, they may have been released.
• Transfers: If a person has been transferred to another facility, they will no longer appear on the Surry County roster. Call (336) 401-8975 to confirm a transfer and find out where they were sent.

Why Someone Might Not Appear

If your search comes back empty, there are a few common reasons:

• Too soon after booking. The record hasn’t processed yet. Wait a few hours and try again.
• Name spelling. The record may use a different spelling or the full legal name. Try the last name only or an alternate spelling.
• They were released. Releases can happen quickly. Call the facility to confirm.
• They were transferred. If they were moved to a state or federal facility, they will not appear on the Surry County roster.
• They were never booked here. If you are not sure which facility holds them, call (336) 401-8975 and ask for confirmation.

If the search still returns nothing after a few hours, call the Surry County Sheriff’s Office at (336) 401-8900.

Once you confirm the person is at Surry County Detention Center and have their inmate ID number, you can:

The Inmate ID Number: Why It Matters

The inmate ID is how the facility tracks every person in custody. At Surry County Detention Center, you need this number for:

• Money deposits through JailPackStore or the lobby kiosk
• Addressing personal mail to the Greensboro PO Box (along with Facility ID 5188)
• Addressing legal mail to P.O. Box 827, Dobson
• Scheduling video visits through PayTel Connect

Deposits submitted with the wrong ID can be delayed, misapplied, or returned. Mail sent without the ID may be delayed or rejected.

Confirming Before a Visit

Before traveling to the facility for an on-site lobby visit, always check the roster to confirm the person is still in custody. Transfers and releases can happen without notice. A quick search before you make the drive to Dobson can save you a wasted trip.
