Tyrrell Prison Work Farm is one of only two prison work farms in North Carolina. The first, Dan River Prison Work Farm in Yanceyville, set the model. Tyrrell was the second, built by prison work crews themselves on 200 acres of Tyrrell County land near Columbia. The $9 million facility was designed with a different approach than traditional prisons: lower construction costs, a working farm footprint, and architecture that stands apart from the standard cell block design. On-site, the facility runs a produce warehouse, food service operations, a barber shop, library, classroom, and chaplain’s office. Men here have access to vocational training, educational programs, and rehabilitative programming. The facility holds the ACA accreditation, which means it meets national standards set by the American Correctional Association for programming, staffing, and care.
