How to Set Up Your Inmate Sales Account
You need an Inmate Sales account before you can receive calls from Yancey County Detention Center. The account is free to create.
Step 1. Go to inmatesales.com.
Click “Sign Up” or “Create Account.” Enter your name, email address, and a password. Confirm your email when prompted.
Step 2. Add your phone number.
In your account settings, add the phone number you want to receive calls on. Use the number you actually answer. The person inside will dial your number through the CPC system at the facility.
Step 3. Fund your account.
Inmate Sales uses a prepaid model. Add funds using a debit or credit card. The cost per call depends on the rate set for Yancey County Detention Center. Log in to your Inmate Sales account to see the current rate before adding funds. Add enough to cover several calls at once so you are not scrambling after each one.
Step 4. Tell the person inside.
Let the person know your phone number is in your Inmate Sales account. They will need to add it through the phone system inside the facility. Some systems require the facility to approve new numbers before the first call can connect. Ask the person to check with staff if a call is not going through.
Step 5. Wait for the call.
When the person dials your number from the facility, your phone will ring. You may hear a recorded prompt asking you to accept the call. Follow the prompts to connect. If you miss the call, check whether Inmate Sales lets them try again at another time.
Calls Are Outbound Only
You cannot call the person directly at Yancey County Detention Center through the Inmate Sales system. All calls go one direction: from the facility to you. If you need to reach the facility for an administrative matter, call the main line at (828) 682-2124.
How Billing Works
Inmate Sales uses a prepaid balance. Funds are drawn from your account each time a call connects. The per-minute rate depends on the pricing set for Yancey County Detention Center. To see the current rate, log in to your Inmate Sales account and look at the pricing for this facility.
Calls charge in real time. If your balance runs out during a call, the call will disconnect. Keep enough in your account to cover a full call without interruption. Inmate Sales may offer an auto-refill option that replenishes your balance when it drops below a set amount. Check your account settings to set that up.
Call Length
The maximum call length at Yancey County Detention Center has not been published by the facility. County jail calls typically run 15 to 20 minutes before the system disconnects and the person must call back. Ask the person inside what the time limit is so you know how to plan your conversations.
What You Cannot Do During a Call
All calls through Inmate Sales at Yancey County Detention Center are monitored and recorded by the Yancey County Sheriff’s Office. This is standard practice at county jails. Keep these points in mind:
- Do not discuss anything related to a pending criminal case, legal strategy, or evidence. These calls are not confidential and can be used in court.
- Do not share personal financial account numbers, passwords, or Social Security numbers.
- Do not try to add a third person to the line. Three-way calling is prohibited and can end the call and result in suspended call privileges.
- Do not make arrangements that could be linked to any unlawful activity.
Attorney-client conversations must be confidential. If someone needs to speak privately with their attorney, that call should go through the facility’s legal call process. Call (828) 682-2124 to ask about the attorney call procedure.
Adding Your Phone Number to the Approved List
The person inside may need to submit your phone number for approval before the first call connects. Ask them to request it through whatever process the facility uses. If a number was added but calls are still not coming through, call Inmate Sales at 877-998-5678 and also check with the facility at (828) 682-2124 to see whether the number has been cleared.
If You Are Not Receiving Calls
If you set up an account but are not getting calls, check these things:
- Confirm your phone number is entered correctly in your Inmate Sales account (correct area code, no typos).
- Check your account balance. If it is zero, calls will not connect.
- Ask the person inside whether your number has been added and approved.
- Check whether your phone blocks calls from unknown numbers or automated systems. Inmate Sales calls may come from an unrecognized number.
- Call Inmate Sales at 877-998-5678 to troubleshoot.
- Call (828) 682-2124 to ask whether the person has any restrictions on their calling privileges.
Video Visits Through Inmate Sales
Inmate Sales also handles remote video visits at Yancey County Detention Center. The same account you create for phone calls can be used to schedule a video visit. If you want to see the person face to face rather than just hear them, see the visitation guide for how to set that up through Inmate Sales.
International Calls
If you need to receive calls at a number outside the United States, check your Inmate Sales account to see whether international numbers are accepted for this facility. Call 877-998-5678 to ask before adding an international number.
Staying Connected Between Calls
Calls are limited by time and by how often the person can get to a phone. Between calls, letters give the person something they can hold onto and read more than once. See the mail guide for the mailing address and what is allowed.
