Overview

Auburn runs the most generous visiting terms of any maximum security prison in this part of the state and the most complicated calendar. There is no cap on visits in a day, a guaranteed three hour minimum once you are in, and holidays are included. The cost of that is a four-way surname split rather than the two-way used everywhere nearby, and two different daily schedules depending on whether it is a Wednesday or a weekend.

Quick Facts

  • 1 Wednesdays, weekends and holidays, effective September 1, 2026
  • 2 Wednesdays 8:30 AM to 2:30 PM, latest arrival 1:15 PM
  • 3 Weekends 9:00 AM to 3:10 PM, latest arrival 2:00 PM
  • 4 Surnames split four ways: A to E, F to L, M to R, S to Z
  • 5 No published cap on visits per day
  • 6 Minimum three hour visit, unless it starts after 12:00 PM
  • 7 Three visitors plus one child under five on a lap
  • 8 No application, no approved-visitor list, photo ID required

Two Schedules, and They Are Not the Same

Auburn is the only one of its neighbours that runs different hours on different days, so read the right row.

DayHoursLatest arrival
Wednesday8:30 AM to 2:30 PM1:15 PM
Weekend9:00 AM to 3:10 PM2:00 PM

Holidays are included in Auburn’s visiting days line, which neither Coxsackie nor Green Haven does.

The Wednesday cutoff of 1:15 PM is the earliest of the two and the one people get wrong, because the weekend figure is the one they remember.

The schedule took effect on September 1, 2026, making it the most recently revised of the three prisons in this batch.

Four Letter Groups

This is the single biggest difference between visiting here and visiting anywhere nearby.

Auburn divides visiting dates by the first letter of the incarcerated person’s last name into four groups:

Group
A to E
F to L
M to R
S to Z

Coxsackie and Green Haven both split two ways, A to L and M to Z. Four groups means each one comes round roughly half as often, so the calendar is tighter and checking it matters more.

And unlike those two prisons, Auburn assigns its Wednesdays to a letter group as well. There is no open-to-everyone day here.

The full year is published as a PDF and DOCCS revises these in place. The current version is marked 8/2026. A copy saved earlier in the year is already out of date.

Three Hours, Guaranteed

Auburn publishes something neither neighbour does: a minimum visit length.

Visitors have a minimum of three hours to visit, unless early termination is needed or the visit began after 12:00 PM.

For a family driving into Cayuga County from Syracuse, Rochester or further, that is a real assurance. It means getting through processing is the hard part, and once you are in, the visit is not going to be cut to forty minutes because the room is busy.

No Cap on Visits in a Day

Auburn publishes no maximum number of visits per day, subject only to the visitor limit and the overcrowding policy.

AuburnNo published cap

Green HavenOne

Combined with the three hour minimum, Auburn is the most accommodating of the three once you have the right date.

Three adult visitors plus one child under five who sits on an adult’s lap, per visit.

Special Housing, and the Rolling Week

One non-legal visit per seven day period, and Auburn counts that week differently from its neighbours.

Each seven day period begins at the conclusion of the last visit. It rolls.

Green Haven uses a fixed week, Friday to Thursday. Coxsackie does not define its week at all. Three prisons, three different answers to the same question, so do not carry an assumption between them.

Nothing to File First

New York operates no visitor application, no approved-visitor list and no background check on visitors, anywhere in the state. DOCCS’s own position is that with little exception anyone may visit during visiting hours, with proper identification, if the person being visited agrees.

The only statewide visitor form is Form 4932A, the medical exemption from the body scanner, filed in advance with DOCCS Central Office Health Services in Albany. An approval covers every facility.

Scanning, and Why Declining Costs an Hour

Every visitor passes a body image scanner before a contact visit, under Directive 4403.

Declining reduces the visit rather than ending it: non-contact, two visitors instead of three, two hours instead of the full window, and no embrace. Note that the two hour non-contact visit is shorter than Auburn’s guaranteed three hour contact minimum.

When the Room Fills

The overcrowding procedure, in order:

  1. Volunteers are asked to end their visit early.
  2. Visitors living within 100 miles are ended after three hours, earliest arrivals first.
  3. Visitors who travelled more than 100 miles are ended after three hours, earliest arrivals first.

Visits with special permission, and visits to someone who has not had one in six months, get particular consideration before anyone is asked to leave.

Note how neatly this fits the three hour minimum: the overcrowding policy only starts ending visits after three hours, which is exactly what the minimum guarantees.

Extended Family Visits

Auburn takes part in the Family Reunion Program, New York’s extended private family visits under Directive 4500. Green Haven does too. Coxsackie does not.

Eligibility normally requires three visits in the previous twelve months to establish a pattern, with discretion for families living more than 300 miles away. Given the four-way letter split makes dates scarcer here, start logging ordinary visits early if the programme matters to you.

Getting to Cayuga County

135 State Street, Auburn, NY 13024, in the city of Auburn, in the Finger Lakes, roughly half an hour west of Syracuse.

DOCCS publishes a Google Maps link and nothing else: no written directions, no parking guidance, no mention of a visitor hospitality centre.

On buses, the department publishes a disclaimer rather than a service. Privately operated lines serve many prisons, seats must be booked in advance, and DOCCS names no companies and accepts no responsibility for them. Auburn is also one of 18 New York prisons reached by a free roundtrip visitor bus, run in partnership with the New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision.

Visiting Details Auburn Omits

  • How the 1:15 PM Wednesday cutoff interacts with the three hour minimum, since a visit starting at 1:15 cannot run three hours before a 2:30 close. The page states both without reconciling them.
  • Parking, lockers, vending or a children’s area at this facility.
  • Whether a visitor hospitality centre operates here.
  • Capacity or population, which DOCCS does not publish per prison.

Four Things to Check Before You Drive

  1. Which of the four letter groups are we, and when does it next come round?
  2. Is it a Wednesday or a weekend, and which cutoff applies?
  3. Is my person in the Special Housing Unit, and when did the last visit end?
  4. Does a holiday fall in the window we are looking at?

Q

What are the visiting hours at Auburn?

Two schedules. Wednesdays run 8:30 AM to 2:30 PM with a 1:15 PM latest arrival. Weekends run 9:00 AM to 3:10 PM with a 2:00 PM latest arrival. Holidays are included in the visiting days, unlike at nearby prisons. The current schedule took effect on September 1, 2026.

Visitation
Q

What is the four-way letter split?

Auburn divides visiting dates by the first letter of the incarcerated person's last name into four groups: A to E, F to L, M to R and S to Z. Coxsackie and Green Haven split two ways. Four groups means each comes round about half as often, and unlike those prisons Auburn assigns Wednesdays to a letter group too rather than opening them to everyone.

Visitation
Q

How long will the visit last?

Auburn publishes a minimum of three hours, unless early termination is needed or the visit began after 12:00 PM. Neither Coxsackie nor Green Haven publishes a minimum at all. For a family travelling a distance, that is a real assurance once you are through processing.

Visitation
Q

How many visits can I have in one day?

Auburn publishes no cap, subject to the three visitor limit and the overcrowding policy. Coxsackie allows two a day and Green Haven allows one, so Auburn is the most accommodating of the three once you have a date that matches your letter group.

Visitation
Q

Do I need to apply or be approved to visit?

No. New York operates no visitor application, no approved-visitor list and no background check on visitors. Bring current photo identification and arrive before the cutoff for that day. The only statewide visitor form is Form 4932A, the medical exemption from the body scanner.

Visitation
Q

My person is in the Special Housing Unit. How often can I visit?

One non-legal visit per seven day period, and Auburn counts that period rolling from the conclusion of the last visit. Green Haven uses a fixed Friday to Thursday week instead, and Coxsackie does not define its week at all, so do not carry an assumption between prisons.

Visitation
Q

What happens if I decline the body scanner?

You still visit, but non-contact through a barrier, with two visitors instead of three and two hours instead of the full window, and no embrace. Note the two hours is shorter than Auburn's guaranteed three hour contact minimum, so declining costs real time here.

Visitation
Q

Is there a Family Reunion Program at Auburn?

Yes. Auburn is on the DOCCS list, as is Green Haven, while Coxsackie is not. Eligibility normally requires three visits in the previous twelve months to establish a pattern, with discretion for families more than 300 miles away. The four-way letter split makes dates scarcer here, so start early.

Visitation
Q

What happens if the visiting room fills up?

Volunteers are asked to leave first, then visitors living within 100 miles are ended after three hours, earliest arrivals first, then visitors who travelled further. Note that the policy only begins ending visits after three hours, which is exactly what Auburn's published minimum guarantees.
