Visiting Five Points Correctional Facility

Overview

Three things decide how a visit to Five Points goes: the day you pick, the time you arrive, and how far you live from Romulus. The first two are simple once you know them, as long as you check the DIN, because each weekend day belongs to even or odd DINs. The third one surprises people, because this prison publishes an order for ending visits when the room is full, and local families are ended first.

Wednesdays, Weekends, and Nothing In Between

Five Points visits on Wednesdays and weekends, from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM.

New York changed its weekday visiting arrangements on 7 September 2026, sorting prisons into groups. Five Points is in the Wednesday group. Some prisons moved to daily visiting and this one did not, so Tuesday, Thursday and Friday are not visiting days here.

Weekend Days Go by the DIN

Wednesdays at Five Points are open to all. Weekend days are split by the DIN.

The Five Points visiting schedule lists each weekend day as Even or Odd, by the last digit of the incarcerated person’s DIN. On the schedule, each weekend’s Saturday and Sunday go to different groups, so a DIN ending in 4 gets the Even day and a DIN ending in 7 gets the Odd one.

Every Wednesday on the schedule is marked All, whatever the DIN.

Look up the DIN before you plan the trip, then check the dated schedule on the NYSDOCCS Five Points page. It shows which weekend dates are Even and which are Odd.

Weekday Holidays Are Not Visiting Days

This is the part most likely to waste a journey.

When New York set the new arrangements, it also named the prisons where weekday holiday visitation remains suspended, and Five Points is on that list. A public holiday falling on a Monday, a Tuesday, a Thursday or a Friday is not a visiting day here, even though it is at other prisons in the state.

Wednesday and the weekend still work as normal.

The 2:00 PM Line

Doors close to arrivals at 2:00 PM even though visiting runs to 3:00 PM.

Treat that as the real deadline and build in time for the journey, the car park and processing. Arriving at five past two is arriving after the cutoff.

Three Hours, and Why That Number Matters

Five Points publishes a minimum of three hours for a visit, unless it starts after 12:00 PM.

That is unusually specific, and it is not only a promise. Three hours is also the point at which the prison may begin ending visits if the room has filled up, which is what makes the next section worth reading before you set out.

Who Gets Asked to Leave First

Most prisons say a visit may be shortened when the room is busy. Five Points publishes the order.

  1. Volunteers. Staff first ask whether anyone will end their visit willingly.
  2. Local visitors, meaning anyone who lives within 100 miles. Ended after three hours, first in first out.
  3. Visitors who travelled more than 100 miles. Same rule, after the local group.

There is one exception written into it. Visits with special permission, and visits to someone who has not had a visit in six months, are considered separately by the Superintendent or the Officer of the Day before anyone ends them.

What this means in practice. If you live in Seneca County or nearby, plan around three hours instead of six on a busy weekend. If you are coming from the city, you are further down the list, which is the one advantage of the long trip.

Three Visitors, and No Daily Cap

Three visitors at a time.

There is no limit on the number of visits in a day, which is more generous than several maximum security prisons in New York. Green Haven allows one a day. Coxsackie allows two.

Special Housing Is One Visit a Week

Someone in SHU custody may have one non-legal visit within any seven day period, during normal visiting hours.

Legal visits are handled separately and are not counted against that.

No Form, No List, No Waiting

There is nothing to file before your first visit to a New York state prison.

No visitor application. No approved-visitor list. No background check to clear and no waiting period. You need valid photo identification and the consent of the person you are visiting.

Three groups do need written permission from the Superintendent first: former incarcerated people, anyone on probation or parole, and DOCCS employees.

Getting to Romulus

Five Points sits at 6600 State Route 96, on the strip of land between Seneca Lake and Cayuga Lake.

It is rural. The nearest sizeable towns are Geneva to the north and Ithaca to the south east, and both are a drive of roughly half an hour to forty minutes. There is no train and no useful bus, so plan on a car and on the 2:00 PM cutoff being the fixed point of the day.

What to Have With You

  • Photo identification for every adult visitor.
  • Their DIN, which the staff at the desk will work from.
  • The day checked, because Wednesday and the weekend are the only options and weekday holidays are out.
  • Time in hand, so 2:00 PM is not the moment you are parking.

When You Cannot Make the Trip

Romulus is a long way from most of New York, and Wednesday is the only midweek option. Between visits, Pigeonly sends letters and photos from your phone, addressed to the caller box the prison really uses, so the weeks in between are not silent.

Families Also Ask

6 of 11 questions

Q

What days can I visit Five Points?

Wednesdays and weekends, 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM. New York reorganised weekday visiting on 7 September 2026 and placed Five Points in the Wednesday group, so Tuesday, Thursday and Friday are not visiting days here. Each weekend day belongs to even or odd DINs, and Wednesdays are open to all.

Visitation
Q

Can I visit on either day of a weekend?

No. The Five Points schedule marks each weekend day Even or Odd by the last digit of the incarcerated person's DIN, and each weekend's Saturday and Sunday go to different groups. Wednesdays are marked All. Check the dated schedule on the NYSDOCCS Five Points page before you travel.

Visitation
Q

Can I visit on a public holiday?

Only if it falls on a weekend. New York named Five Points as one of the prisons where weekday holiday visitation remains suspended, so a holiday Monday is not a visiting day here even though it is at some other state prisons.

Visitation
Q

What time do I have to arrive by?

2:00 PM. Visiting runs until 3:00 PM but arrivals close an hour earlier, and the cutoff is enforced. Give yourself room for the journey and for processing.

Visitation
Q

How long does a visit last?

A minimum of three hours, unless the visit starts after 12:00 PM. That is published, not informal. Three hours is also the point where the prison can start ending visits if the room is full.

Visitation
Q

Could my visit be cut short?

Yes, if the visiting room fills. The order is published. Volunteers first, then visitors living within 100 miles after three hours on a first in first out basis, then visitors who travelled more than 100 miles on the same basis. Someone who has not had a visit in six months is considered separately before anyone is ended.

Visitation
Q

Does living nearby count against me?

In one narrow way, yes. When the room is overcrowded, visitors within 100 miles of Five Points are the first group ended after three hours. It is worth knowing if you live locally and were planning a full day.

Visitation
Q

How many people can visit at once?

Three visitors at a time. There is no cap on how many visits happen in a day, which is more generous than Green Haven at one a day or Coxsackie at two.

Visitation
Q

What if my person is in the Special Housing Unit?

One non-legal visit within any seven day period, during normal visiting hours. Legal visits are separate and are not counted against that allowance.

Visitation
Q

Do I need to apply or get on a list first?

No. New York has no visitor application and no approved-visitor list for an ordinary visit. Bring valid photo identification, and the person you are visiting has to consent. Former incarcerated people, anyone on probation or parole, and DOCCS employees need written permission from the Superintendent.

Visitation
Q

Where exactly is Five Points?

6600 State Route 96, Romulus, in Seneca County, on the land between Seneca Lake and Cayuga Lake. Geneva and Ithaca are each roughly half an hour to forty minutes away, and there is no practical public transport, so plan on a car.
