Oswego County Inmate Search

The link Oswego County labels Inmate Lookup is not a county roster at all, it hands the question straight to a statewide service. Start with the search below.

Overview

There is a link on the Oswego County Sheriff’s site labelled Inmate Lookup, and it is easy to assume that means a county list. It does not. Following it takes you to VINE, the statewide service. Knowing that saves you hunting for a roster that was never there, and it changes which route you use first.

Quick Facts

  • 1 The Inmate Lookup link points at the statewide VINE service
  • 2 VINE takes a name rather than an identification number
  • 3 Jail Administration, 315-349-3300, is staffed
  • 4 After hours is 315-349-3388
  • 5 About 135 people were held on an average day in May 2022
  • 6 The jail is at 39 Churchill Road, inside the Public Safety Center

The Corrections Division page carries a link called Inmate Lookup. It resolves to vinelink.com.

VINE is a statewide custody service, not an Oswego County product. So what the county is doing is answering the question by handing it to somebody else, which is a legitimate answer but not the one the label suggests.

VINE Takes a Name

VINE does what most people mean by an inmate search. You type a name, and it tells you whether that person is in custody in New York.

Two things to hold on to.

It lags. VINE reflects what a county has sent it, and a booking has to be processed before it is transmitted. Somebody arrested this evening will very often not be there yet.

An empty result proves less than it looks. It means no record in VINE at that moment. It does not mean nobody is in a pod on Churchill Road.

VINE will also register you for notifications about custody changes, which beats refreshing a page.

For a Fresh Arrest, Ring the Jail

If the booking was in the last day or two, 315-349-3300 is the better route and it is not close.

A staffed line confirms somebody is there while a database is still waiting on an update. 315-349-3388 covers after hours.

While you are on the phone, ask for their inmate ID number. You will need it for the envelope, because mail here is addressed with the facility name and their ID and goes to a scanning box in Syracuse rather than to the jail. Getting the number on the first call saves a returned letter later.

What Kind of Place It Is

Useful context when you are working out whether this is the right facility.

The jail is a direct supervision building inside the county Public Safety Center. People are housed in pods rather than along corridors of cells, across three security levels, and the county describes behaviour moving people towards progressively more normalised living areas.

A Vera Institute count put about 135 people in Oswego County custody on an average day in May 2022, and the county’s population had fallen 11 percent from May 2019.

Because it is a county jail, most people in it are awaiting trial or serving a short sentence, and the population turns over quickly. A result here goes stale faster than one at a state prison.

Make Sure It Is the Right Oswego

There is an Oswego in Illinois and an Oswego in Kansas, and the name surfaces in searches for all three. If you are working from a vendor listing rather than the county site, check the state before you act on anything, particularly before funding a phone account.

When the Arrest Was Hours Ago

Nothing online helps yet. Somebody picked up this evening may still be with the arresting agency, and no record exists in any system until booking is finished.

Give it a few hours, then ring. Once you know they are there, Pigeonly can get a letter and photos moving to the Syracuse box the same day.

6 of 7 questions

Q

Is there an Oswego County inmate search online?

Yes. The link labelled Inmate Lookup on the Sheriff's Corrections Division page goes to VINE, the statewide custody service, which searches by name.

Inmate Search
Q

Can I search Oswego County inmates by name?

Yes, through VINE, which is free and takes a name rather than an identification number. Read a blank result carefully though, because it means no record in VINE at that moment rather than nobody being in custody.

Inmate Search
Q

How do I find out if someone was booked last night?

Ring Jail Administration on 315-349-3300, or 315-349-3388 after hours. A staffed line confirms a booking hours before any database catches up, and for a fresh arrest that is the only route that reliably works.

Inmate Search
Q

What should I ask for while I am on the phone?

Their inmate ID number. Mail at this jail is addressed with the full facility name and that number and goes to a scanning box in Syracuse, so without it a letter can come back. Getting it on the first call saves a wasted envelope.

Inmate Search
Q

Why can I not find them anywhere?

Usually because booking is not finished, so no record exists yet, or because they are still with the arresting agency rather than at the jail. Give it a few hours before you draw any conclusion, then call.

Inmate Search
Q

How many people are held there?

A Vera Institute count put about 135 people in Oswego County custody on an average day in May 2022, down 11 percent from May 2019. It is a direct supervision facility where people live in pods across three security levels.

Inmate Search
Q

How do I find out about a release date?

VINE is built for exactly that and will register you for notifications on custody changes, which is more reliable than checking by hand. For a specific date or conditions of release, ring 315-349-3300.
