Ten Numbers Apart
C/O [Full Legal Name]
Suffolk County Correctional Facility
110 Center Drive South
Riverhead, NY 11901
The facility is at 100 Center Drive South. Mail goes to 110. Both numbers appear on Suffolk County material, both are correct for their own purpose, and a letter addressed to 100 is addressed to a building rather than a mailroom.
Where the name is a common one, the county advises adding a date of birth so that post reaches the right person.
This single address also covers Yaphank, which has none of its own. So if you are writing to someone and are not certain which of the two jails holds them, the address is the same either way. That is the one part of the Suffolk process where the two-jail problem does not bite.
What Will Be Refused
Suffolk publishes a specific list:
- Envelopes that are not white. This is the most commonly missed rule, because greeting cards often come in coloured envelopes.
- Stamps or postage enclosed inside the letter
- Polaroid photographs, whatever their size
- Photographs larger than five inches by seven
- Cards larger than six inches by nine
- Stickers
- Pornographic or graphic images
- Hardcover publications with the cover still attached
A standard photo print passes. An enlargement does not.
The Property Caps Are a Separate Limit
The mail rules govern what gets through the door. The property rules govern what somebody may keep, and they are a different set of numbers.
| Item | How many at once |
|---|
| Photographs, five by seven maximum | 15 |
| Paperback books | 5 |
| Magazines | 5 |
| Current newspapers | 2 |
| Prayer rug | 1 |
| Single layer black or white kuffi | 1 |
| Plain wedding band | 1 |
So sending twenty photographs is not useful even if every one of them meets the size rule. Fifteen is the ceiling on what can be held.
Clothing must have no pockets and no drawstrings, in hunter green or white. The county defines hunter green by comparison to a New York Jets football jersey, which is a more practical description than any colour name would be.
Books Have to Ship Direct
Books, magazines and newspapers must come direct from a publisher or a reputable online vendor, and the county names Amazon and Barnes and Noble as examples. That is a broader rule than the publisher-only policies many jails run.
What changed, in the county’s own words: items brought in by visitors or sent through the mail will no longer be accepted. Buying a paperback and posting it yourself does not work. Ordering the same paperback shipped directly does.
Hardcover books need the cover removed, and the property cap is five paperbacks at a time.
Sending Letters and Photos Online
Suffolk names one electronic mail service and links it from its own site, through a county-specific portal.
The published prices are 1 dollar 19 per photograph and 60 cents per letter page, with no refunds.
It is a print-at-facility service rather than a scanning one. The vendor states that its software delivers mail inside correctional facilities without a scanning, photocopying or third party handling step, and that photographs print on genuine four by six photo paper. Your person receives a print, not an image on a screen.
The fifteen photograph property cap applies to anything sent this way as well.
What Pigeonly adds. Pigeonly lets you write a letter or pick photos on your phone and we print and post them to Suffolk under the county’s rules, without a printer, envelopes or stamps at your end, and without having to remember that the mail number is 110 and not 100. It goes by post, which is the accurate description: we are not printing inside the facility the way the county’s own service does.
Legal Mail Is Not Documented
Suffolk County publishes nothing about how legal or certified mail is handled. We checked the Sheriff’s full 80 page site index and it is not there, for either jail.
Confirm the procedure on 631-852-2241 before sending anything time sensitive.
Nothing Is Scanned, and Nothing Detours
Two direct answers.
There is no third party scanning vendor. No digital mail processor appears anywhere in county material or contracts. What you post goes to Suffolk County.
The address is Suffolk’s own, not a processing centre in another state. No claim about saved transit time applies here, because there is no transit stage to skip.
