Using the BOP Inmate Locator

Go to bop.gov/inmateloc/ and search by:

• First and last name
• 8-digit BOP register number (most reliable)
• Race and age (optional filters to narrow results with common names)

Results typically show:

• Full name and register number
• Current facility (FCI Elkton if they’re housed there)
• Unit assignment within the complex (FCI, Camp, or FSL)
• Age and race
• Projected release date

What the Search Shows vs. What It Doesn’t

The BOP Inmate Locator covers everyone currently in federal custody, including all BOP facilities across the country. It does not cover:

• State prison inmates (use the ODRC Offender Search for Ohio state facilities)
• County jail inmates (check individual county rosters)
• Pre-trial detainees held at local jails or USMS facilities

Why the Search Might Return No Result

Common reasons:

• Name mismatch: The BOP uses legal names. Try alternate spellings, middle names, or the register number if you have it.
• Recently transferred: If the person arrived at FCI Elkton within the past day or two, the record may not have updated yet.
• Different facility: They may be at another federal facility. The search will show wherever they currently are in the BOP system.
• Released: They may have completed their sentence, been released to a halfway house, or placed on supervision.
• Pre-sentencing: People awaiting federal sentencing may still be at a county or USMS facility, not yet in the BOP system.

Call (330) 420-6200 if you believe the person is at FCI Elkton but the search doesn’t confirm it.

After You Find Them

Once you confirm the person is at FCI Elkton:

• To get release notifications: Register with VINE at vinelink.com or call 1-800-770-0192.
• To visit: Get on the approved visitor list by having the inmate submit your name. See the Visitation guide.
