How TRUFONE Works

TRUFONE is the BOP’s phone system used at every federal facility. Inmates initiate calls from phones in their housing unit during scheduled phone times. You cannot call in and be connected to a specific inmate.

For you to receive calls, the inmate must first add your phone number to their approved call list. They do this through the TRULINCS system (the inmate computer system at BOP facilities) or by submitting a request to their unit team. The BOP reviews new numbers before calls are allowed.

Once your number is approved, the inmate can call you directly. Charges deduct from their commissary account automatically with each call. You do not need to prepay or open an account.

Getting Your Number Approved

Ask the inmate to add your number through TRULINCS or by submitting a call list update to their unit team. Approval typically takes a few days. Numbers can be blocked if associated with prior incidents or BOP policy violations.

Call Rates

As of April 2026, FCC rate caps limit interstate calls from federal prisons to $0.11 per minute. This rate applies to calls from FCI Elkton. In-state rates may differ. Call charges deduct from the inmate’s commissary account.

All Calls Are Monitored

BOP calls are recorded and monitored. Do not discuss anything you would not want staff or law enforcement to hear. There is no expectation of privacy on TRUFONE calls.

Attorney-client calls have a separate privileged process. The inmate’s attorney must contact the facility at (330) 420-6200 to arrange confidential legal calls.

CorrLinks is the BOP’s monitored email system. To use it:

  1. Go to corrlinks.com and create a free account using your email address.
  2. Wait for the inmate to send you an invitation through the TRULINCS terminal at the facility.
  3. Accept the invitation in your CorrLinks inbox.
  4. Once connected, you can send and receive messages.

Messages are reviewed by BOP staff before delivery. There is typically a small per-message fee charged to the inmate’s account. CorrLinks is not real-time. Think of it as monitored email, not instant messaging.

Troubleshooting

If you are not receiving calls:

  • Confirm the inmate has added your number to their approved call list.
  • Verify that your carrier does not block calls from correctional facilities. Some carriers do.
  • Ask the inmate to check their TRULINCS account for any blocks or errors on your number.
  • Call the facility at (330) 420-6200 for help with facility-side issues.
