Overview

This is one of SCDC’s contact visitation institutions, meaning visits happen in person, not through plexiglass, once a woman has cleared the reception and evaluation intake period. During that first stretch, more restrictive rules apply, identical to the ones used at Kirkland R&E for men.

Quick Facts

  • Contact visitation is allowed here, unlike SCDC's non-contact institutions.
  • Regular visiting hours: Saturday and Sunday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., in 2-hour blocks.
  • During the reception period (first 30 days), no in-person visitors are allowed at all.
  • After 30 days of reception status, only parents, grandparents, siblings, grandchildren, spouses, and children may visit.
  • Call (803) 896-1296, Monday and Tuesday, 8 a.m. to noon, to check reception-period eligibility.
  • Once past intake, up to 15 approved visitors can be on her regular visiting list, and visits must be scheduled through GTL.

Contact Visitation, With One Exception

Unlike Broad River, Kershaw, Kirkland, Lee, Lieber, McCormick, Perry, Ridgeland, and Turbeville, this facility allows in-person contact visits, embraces and a kiss at the beginning and end of a visit are permitted, once a woman is past the reception intake period. The exception is the intake period itself, when this facility functions as the statewide Women’s Reception and Evaluation Center and follows a separate, more restrictive set of rules.

The Reception Period: First 30 Days

For the first 30 days after arriving, no in-person visitor is permitted, regardless of relationship. This mirrors the rule used at Kirkland Reception and Evaluation Center for men, since this facility serves the same statewide intake function for women.

After 30 Days of Reception Status

Once she’s been in reception status more than 30 days, visitation opens up, but only to a specific set of relations: parents (including stepparents), grandparents, siblings, grandchildren, spouse, and children (including stepchildren). Other relatives and friends have to wait until she’s fully processed and assigned before they’re eligible.

Checking Eligibility

Call (803) 896-1296, staffed only Monday and Tuesday, 8 a.m. to noon. Outside that window, calls to this line won’t get through to reception-specific visitation staff.

Regular Visiting Hours (Once Past Intake)

Once she’s fully processed, whether she remains at this facility or transfers elsewhere, standard SCDC visiting hours apply: Saturday and Sunday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., in 2-hour scheduled blocks, booked through the GTL scheduler at scdoc.gtlvisitme.com/app. Up to 15 approved visitors can be on her regular visiting list, though only a portion of those come at once depending on your scheduled slot.

Dress Code and What to Bring

Statewide SCDC visitor rules apply: sleeved shirts, no see-through fabric, shorts and skirts no shorter than three inches above the knee, no tight clothing. Bring one photo ID, one small clear bag, and one set of car keys. Vending machines in the visitation area accept debit and credit cards only, not cash.

Children Visiting

Children under 18 must be accompanied by an approved adult visitor. Those age 10 and older need a state-issued photo ID; younger children need a long-form birth certificate. Female inmates with contact-visitation privileges are allowed to hold children age six and younger in their laps during a visit.
