Where to Send a Letter, Card, or Photo

Personal mail does not go to Overton. Address it to the Digital Mail Processing Center in Dallas:

The commitment name is the full legal name TDCJ has on file, which is not always the name the family uses. Look up both the name and the TDCJ number with the TDCJ Inmate Search before you write the envelope. TDCJ requires both, and mail missing either one comes back to you.

Dallas takes general correspondence, greeting cards, drawings, and photos. Staff scan each piece and send the file to the unit mailroom, where it lands on the person’s tablet or gets printed and handed to them.

What Still Goes to the Unit in Overton

Some mail never touches Dallas. Send these to the unit itself:

TDCJ accepts these at the unit by regular and certified U.S. mail:

• Legal mail, special mail, and media correspondence
• Publications sent directly from an authorized source, such as a publisher or a bookseller like Amazon
• Business correspondence from organizations, businesses, and agencies
• Checks from veterans benefits, Social Security, or disability

You cannot buy a book and mail it yourself. It has to ship straight from the seller with the invoice or packing slip inside.

Documents That Need a Signature

If you need the person to sign something, that envelope goes to the unit law library, not to Dallas. TDCJ’s correspondence policy sets the format:

The law librarian watches the person sign, then mails the original back in a stamped, addressed envelope. Put one inside, or the signed document may not reach you.

What Happens to the Paper You Mailed

The scanning center keeps your original letter or photo for 90 calendar days, then destroys it. Your loved one keeps the scan, not the paper.

If you want the paper back, put a self-addressed stamped envelope in with your letter. That is the only way TDCJ returns it.

What Gets Mail Rejected

The most common reason is the address. A personal letter sent to Overton is refused as general correspondence and comes back to you, even though the person really is housed there.

TDCJ’s correspondence policy also blocks certain content. Mail is rejected if it contains threats, gang material, a sexually explicit image, or an altered photo that hides a face so the person in it cannot be identified. Inmates also cannot receive C.O.D. mail.

TDCJ does not publish a size limit for photos going to the scanning center. It publishes content rules instead, so what matters most is that faces are clear and nothing in the photo breaks the rules above.
