Quick Facts
1 Six TDCJ units sit in Gatesville: Crain, Hilltop, Murray, Woodman, O'Daniel, and the men's Hughes Unit.
2 Crain is at 1401 State School Road and Hilltop is at 1500 State School Road. Both are described as three miles north of Gatesville.
3 Crain handles intake, receiving, and release. Woodman does the formal diagnostics and classification, which is why a result can change soon after she arrives.
4 O'Daniel is still called Mountain View by its own unit code, so older paperwork naming Mountain View is naming O'Daniel.
5 Crain's own line is (254) 865-8431. Hilltop, Murray, Woodman, and O'Daniel each have their own.
Why Someone Might Not Show Up
Gatesville is the hardest address in the Texas system to read at a glance, and the search result is what settles it. Five of the six units in town house women, and the two easiest to mix up sit on the same road: Crain at 1401 State School Road, Hilltop at 1500. A result naming Hilltop, Murray, Woodman, or O’Daniel is a different prison, not a variation on Crain.
Timing is the other reason. Crain handles intake, receiving, and release, while Woodman does the formal diagnostics and classification, so a woman can appear at Crain and then appear elsewhere a short time later without anything unusual having happened.
One placement rule moves people off this result entirely. TDCJ’s March 2024 Correctional Managed Health Care materials state that all pregnant women are housed at the Carole Young Medical Facility, which provides obstetrical care. Carole Young is in Dickinson, roughly 250 miles from Gatesville.
If You Can’t Find Them
If you are working from older paperwork, check the unit name against what the locator returns rather than the other way round. A document naming Mountain View is naming O’Daniel. Crain’s own line is (254) 865-8431, which reaches Crain only. Hilltop, Murray and Woodman share the same 1,283-acre campus and each has its own number.

Q
How do I find someone at the Christina Melton Crain Unit?
Use TDCJ's statewide Inmate Search at inmate.tdcj.texas.gov. Search by commitment name or TDCJ number, then read the unit name in the result carefully, since six TDCJ units share the town of Gatesville.

Q
What is the difference between Crain and Hilltop?
They are separate prisons on the same road. Crain is 1401 State School Road and Hilltop is 1500 State School Road, and both are described as three miles north of Gatesville, one off Highway 36 and one off Business Highway 36. The locator result names which one.

Q
Is Crain the women's intake unit?
Partly. Crain handles intake, receiving, and release, but Woodman does the formal diagnostics and classification. That split is why someone can appear at Crain and then move shortly afterward.

Q
My daughter is pregnant. Will the search still show Crain?
No. TDCJ's March 2024 Correctional Managed Health Care materials state that all pregnant women are housed at the Carole Young Medical Facility, which provides obstetrical care. Carole Young is in Dickinson, roughly 250 miles from Gatesville.
