Gatesville is the hardest address in the Texas system to read at a glance, and the search result is what settles it. Five of the six units in town house women, and the two easiest to mix up sit on the same road: Crain at 1401 State School Road, Hilltop at 1500. A result naming Hilltop, Murray, Woodman, or O’Daniel is a different prison, not a variation on Crain.
Timing is the other reason. Crain handles intake, receiving, and release, while Woodman does the formal diagnostics and classification, so a woman can appear at Crain and then appear elsewhere a short time later without anything unusual having happened.
One placement rule moves people off this result entirely. TDCJ’s March 2024 Correctional Managed Health Care materials state that all pregnant women are housed at the Carole Young Medical Facility, which provides obstetrical care. Carole Young is in Dickinson, roughly 250 miles from Gatesville.
If you are working from older paperwork, check the unit name against what the locator returns rather than the other way round. A document naming Mountain View is naming O’Daniel. Crain’s own line is (254) 865-8431, which reaches Crain only. Hilltop, Murray and Woodman share the same 1,283-acre campus and each has its own number.
