Crain’s Schedule, and the Column That Is Empty
Here is the visiting schedule for the Christina Melton Crain Unit, read from TDCJ’s Unit Visitation Schedule:
| Type | Days and hours |
|---|
| Contact | Saturday and Sunday, 8:00 AM to 5:30 PM |
| Regular | Saturday and Sunday, 8:00 AM to 5:30 PM |
| Restricted | Saturday and Sunday, 8:00 AM to 5:30 PM |
| Video/Tablet | Not listed on TDCJ’s schedule |
Cotulla, Telford, Garza West and most other Texas units show hours in all four columns. Crain shows three. TDCJ’s own family guide explains why: at a named group of units, visitors wanting a remote video visit register with Securus Technologies rather than using the TDCJ visitation portal.
So the practical answer is that Crain runs two booking systems in parallel. In-person visits go through the TDCJ portal one to seven days ahead. Remote video goes through Securus. Booking the wrong one is a wasted afternoon.
The Two In-Person Types, and What They Mean
Contact is the same room. TDCJ’s rules allow embracing and kissing once at the start and once at the end, and holding hands with hands on top of the table. Young children may be held. It is limited to immediate family unless unit administration approves otherwise.
Regular is behind glass. TDCJ’s rulebook states that general visits “are also referred to as non-contact and regular visits,” and describes visitors and inmates separated by a glass wall or partition. A family expecting a hug at a regular visit has misread the schedule.
Restricted appears as a column but TDCJ does not define the term in its April 2025 visitation rules. The nearest published rule covers security detention, where a woman gets one general visit a week at Level 1, two a month at Level 2, and one a month at Level 3. We could not confirm what the label means at Crain specifically, so call (254) 865-8431 rather than assume.
The 60-Day Rule, and Why It Bites Here
Contact visits require 60 days in TDCJ custody counted from the receive date. That is a statewide rule, but it lands harder at Crain than almost anywhere, because Crain handles intake, receiving and release. A woman recently arrived is very likely inside that 60-day window, which means her first visits are behind glass regardless of her custody level.
Worth knowing before you drive: it explains a “regular visit only” answer that otherwise looks arbitrary.
Getting on the Visitors List
The list is built by the inmate, not by you. She submits Form RO-1, which holds up to 10 names. There is no public version for a visitor to download, and changes are allowed once every six months.
Confirm the Gatesville Unit First
Six TDCJ units sit in Gatesville, five of them for women. Crain is at 1401 State School Road and Hilltop is at 1500 State School Road, and both are described as three miles north of town. Murray, Woodman and O’Daniel are also nearby, and O’Daniel is still called Mountain View by its own unit code.
Crain’s own line is (254) 865-8431, which reaches Crain only. Each of the others has its own number. Check the locator against the unit name before you set out, since arriving at the right town and the wrong prison is the most common failed trip in this part of Texas.
What You Can Bring
$35 in coins only, plus one card for the vending machines. No bills, phones, cameras, smartwatches or tobacco past the perimeter. Texas Penal Code section 38.11 makes bringing prohibited items onto prison property a felony.
No all-white clothing, and shorts or skirts no more than three inches above mid-knee. On the first full weekend of each month, visitors can have two photographs taken with their loved one free of charge.
What TDCJ Does Not Publish for Crain
Session length, visitor capacity, arrival cutoff, parking and lockers are not published for this unit. Neither is the exact ZIP, cleanly: TDCJ’s unit page and handbook give 76599-2999 while its directory table gives 76528. One call settles both that and the questions above.
