Calls from the Christina Melton Crain Unit run through Securus. Set up an account at texasprisonphone.com or by calling (866) 806-7804, tied to the number you want her to reach. Until that is done, her calls will not connect.

The name on your government photo ID has to match the name on the phone bill. A line billed to a parent, a partner or a former roommate is the most common reason a registration stalls.

Securus Covers Video at Crain Too

At most TDCJ units, phone calls go through Securus while remote video is booked separately through the TDCJ visitation portal. Crain is one of the exceptions. Its Video/Tablet column on TDCJ’s published unit schedule is blank, and TDCJ’s family guide directs visitors at a named group of units to register with Securus for remote video instead.

The practical upside is that one relationship with Securus covers both. The practical catch is that looking for Crain’s video slots on the TDCJ portal will turn up nothing, which reads like an error but is not. In-person visits at Crain still go through the TDCJ portal, so the two systems run side by side. That split is covered in more detail on our visitation guide.

The 30-Minute Cap

Each call ends at 30 minutes. There is no monthly minute allowance, so the limit is per call rather than per month, and a longer conversation means calling back.

Phones are available from 5:00 AM to midnight. That is the system’s operating window rather than a guarantee of access at a given hour, since phone time depends on her unit schedule and custody level as well.

Register Early if She Just Arrived

Crain handles intake, receiving and release, so many women there are newly arrived and have not yet had contact with anyone outside. Registration is tied to your phone number rather than to the prison, so setting it up now means a transfer to another unit does not cost you the connection.

It is also the fastest channel available in her first weeks. Contact visits require 60 days in TDCJ custody from the receive date, so for a new arrival the phone often comes well before a contact visit does.

What TDCJ Does Not Publish

No per-minute rate appears anywhere in TDCJ’s published material. Any page quoting a precise cents-per-minute figure is not sourcing it from TDCJ. Confirm the rate with Securus when you fund the account.

TDCJ also does not publish how many numbers may be on a calling list. The 10-name limit that gets repeated belongs to the Visitors List, a separate list the inmate submits on Form RO-1.

If Calls Are Not Coming Through

Work the causes in order: the number is not registered, the billing name does not match your ID, the account is out of funds, or she is outside phone hours or limited by custody status. If none of those explain it, Crain’s own line is (254) 865-8431, which reaches Crain and not the other Gatesville units.
