Using the BOP Inmate Locator
The BOP Inmate Locator is the authoritative system for federal inmate records. Visit bop.gov/inmateloc/ and enter:
- Full first and last name (nicknames will return fewer results)
- BOP register number, if known
The results show the inmate’s current facility, status, and projected release date. If the result shows Coleman, look closely at which specific facility is listed. This complex has four distinct units, and mail, money, and visiting details can differ between them.
Why the Coleman Complex Causes Confusion
Coleman is one of the largest federal prison complexes in the country. It houses four separate institutions on one campus:
- FCI Coleman Medium (this facility)
- USP Coleman I (high security)
- USP Coleman II (high security)
- Coleman Satellite Camp (minimum security)
Because all four share the same general location in Sumter County, families sometimes assume any Coleman result refers to the same unit. It doesn’t. Each facility has its own custody level, population, and in some cases distinct procedures. Always confirm the BOP Inmate Locator result specifically says “Coleman Medium” (sometimes abbreviated as COM) before assuming the details on this page apply.
What to Have Ready
Gather the BOP register number and full legal name before you search. If the inmate was recently transferred, whether between Coleman’s own units or from a different institution entirely, the BOP locator typically updates within 24 to 48 hours.
What the Search Results Show
Once you find a match, the BOP Inmate Locator typically shows:
- Full legal name and BOP register number
- Current facility name and location
- Age
- Race and sex
- Projected release date, if applicable
The locator does not show detailed disciplinary history, exact housing unit assignments, or the reason for a transfer, since none of that is public information.
If the Search Comes Back Empty
If you cannot find the person, double-check the name spelling and BOP register number. If still empty, wait 24 hours and search again, since new commitments and transfers take time to appear. If it still doesn’t show up, call FCI Coleman Medium at 352-689-5000, or contact the U.S. Marshals Service if the person is in pretrial custody instead of serving a sentence.
Why Someone Might Not Appear or Might Show a Different Facility
Recently transferred: Federal inmates move between facilities for classification, medical, program, or bed-space reasons. The locator can take a day or two to catch up after a transfer.
Held at a different Coleman unit: If the person shows up under USP Coleman I, USP Coleman II, or the satellite camp instead of FCI Coleman Medium, that means they’re at a different facility within the same complex, with potentially different visiting, phone, and mail procedures. Confirm which specific unit applies before using this page’s information.
Pretrial or awaiting sentencing: People who haven’t been sentenced yet may be held by the U.S. Marshals Service at a different facility, including a contracted county jail, instead of a BOP institution.
State versus federal custody: If the person was sentenced in Florida state court instead of federal court, they will not appear in the BOP system. Use the FDOC Offender Search at dc.state.fl.us/OffenderSearch/Search.aspx instead.
Recently released: A released status will typically still show in the locator instead of the person disappearing entirely, though details can vary.
Confirming Before You Visit or Send Money
Confirm the person is still at FCI Coleman Medium specifically, not a different Coleman unit, before making a trip, sending a deposit, or mailing a letter. A transfer to USP Coleman I or II, even though it’s the same general campus, can mean a different mailing address and different visiting rules. Call 352-689-5000 to confirm before you act on old information.
The BOP Inmate Locator only covers federal Bureau of Prisons inmates. It does not include Florida state prison inmates, county jail bookings, or people held in other states’ systems. For Florida state prison inmates, use the FDOC Offender Search. For county jail bookings, contact the relevant county sheriff’s office directly.
