BOP National Lockbox Address

Send mail-for-funds payments to:

[Inmate Name and Registration Number] BOP National Lockbox P.O. Drawer 288 Des Moines, IA 50947-0001

All funds are processed centrally by the BOP and then applied to the inmate’s commissary trust account. Do not address anything to FCI Coleman Medium’s street address in Sumterville, since funds sent there will not be processed and may be returned or delayed for weeks.

Electronic Payment Options

Western Union

Use Western Union’s Quick Collect Program. Payments must be made under the receiver name “Federal Bureau of Prisons” with the appropriate receive code for the BOP National Lockbox.

MoneyGram

Use MoneyGram’s ExpressPayment Program. Payments must be made under the receiver name “Federal Bureau of Prisons” with the receive code 7932.

A credit or debit card is required to complete a payment online or through the mobile app. You can also pay with cash or a payment card at a Western Union or MoneyGram agent location in person.

Mail Payment Options

You can send a USPS money order or a cashier’s check from a bank. Include a remittance form or note with the inmate’s full name and BOP register number. Personal checks, cash, gift cards, and foreign currency are not accepted through the mail.

Limits

Western Union and MoneyGram electronic payments are capped at $300 per day per inmate. Commissary spending itself is generally capped around $360 per month, often broken into roughly $180 every two weeks, under standard BOP policy.

Why the Lockbox System Exists

The BOP centralizes all inmate financial transactions through the National Lockbox to reduce the risk of contraband smuggled through cash or checks mailed directly to a facility, and to standardize processing across more than 120 BOP institutions nationwide, including every facility within the Coleman complex. This is why FCI Coleman Medium does not have its own separate deposit address.

Restrictions

  • Do not send cash by mail.
  • Do not send gifts or gift cards.
  • Do not send money to the FCI Coleman Medium facility address in Sumterville.
  • Do not include funds in the same envelope as a personal letter.
  • Do not send a personal check; only money orders and cashier’s checks are accepted by mail.

Commissary Use at FCI Coleman Medium

Once funds clear through the BOP National Lockbox, they become available to the inmate for commissary purchases such as food, hygiene items, clothing, and approved electronics. Commissary shopping days and hours are set by the facility and were not independently confirmed for FCI Coleman Medium specifically. Call 352-689-5000 to ask about current commissary access.

What Happens If the Inmate Transfers

If the inmate is transferred to a different BOP facility, including a move within the Coleman complex itself (for example, from FCI Coleman Medium to USP Coleman I or II), the trust account balance generally moves with them since all deposits are processed through the same centralized BOP Lockbox system. Confirm the current facility using the BOP Inmate Locator before sending additional funds after a suspected transfer.

Payment Issues

If a payment is delayed or rejected, first confirm that the inmate’s BOP register number and name were entered correctly. A single incorrect digit in the register number is one of the most common reasons a payment doesn’t post. If the problem persists, contact the BOP’s National Lockbox customer service through the payment vendor (Western Union or MoneyGram) or refile the payment with a fresh money order.

Court-Ordered Financial Obligations

If the inmate has court-ordered restitution or other financial obligations, a portion of incoming funds or the trust account balance may be subject to the Inmate Financial Responsibility Program, which the BOP administers separately from routine commissary deposits. Ask facility staff for details specific to an individual case.
