Green River Visitation. Hours, Approval & Rules

Get approved first, and arrive before 11:30 a.m. on Saturday.

Overview

Visiting Green River takes two steps: get on the approved visitor list, then come during visiting hours. In-person visits are Saturdays only, 8:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., and you must arrive before 11:30 a.m. to be let in. You cannot just show up without being approved first.

Quick Facts

  • In-person visits: Saturdays only, 8:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
  • Arrival cutoff: you must be there before 11:30 a.m. to be admitted.
  • You must be on the approved visitor list before your first visit.
  • Apply through the Kentucky DOC and wait for approval, which can take time.
  • Bring a valid government-issued photo ID, such as a driver's license or passport.
  • Video visits are available through Securus and booked at least 48 hours ahead.
  • Green River is at 1200 River Road, Central City, KY 42330.

Step 1. Get on the Approved Visitor List

Before you can visit, the person has to put you on their visitor list, and you have to be approved by the Kentucky Department of Corrections. This means filling out a visitor application and passing a background check.

Approval is not instant. It can take several weeks, so start early. Do not drive to Green River until you know you are approved.

Step 2. Know the Visiting Schedule

In-person visits at Green River are held on Saturdays only, from 8:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

The most important rule: you must arrive before 11:30 a.m. If you get there after the cutoff, you will not be admitted, even though the session runs until 2:00 p.m. Plan your drive so you arrive with time to spare.

What to Bring

  • A valid government-issued photo ID, such as a Kentucky ID, driver’s license, military ID, or passport
  • Nothing else beyond what the facility allows

Leave phones, bags, and extra items in your car. Bringing in items that are not allowed can end your visit before it starts.

Dress Code and Conduct

Kentucky prisons enforce a dress code for visitors. Avoid revealing clothing, and do not wear anything that looks like an inmate or staff uniform. When in doubt, dress modestly. Visitors who break the dress code can be turned away.

Video Visits

If you cannot make the drive, Green River offers video visits through Securus. You schedule these at least 48 hours ahead through your Securus account. Video visits are a good option for family who live far away or cannot travel on a Saturday.
