KOOL is Kentucky’s official public inmate search database, maintained by the Department of Corrections. Here is how to use it.
Step 1: Go to kool.corrections.ky.gov. The search is on the homepage. No login required.
Step 2: Enter the last name and first initial. KDOC recommends using just the last name and first initial for the most accurate results. Adding a full first name can cause misses if it was entered differently in the system.
Step 3: Use filters if you get too many results. You can narrow by race, gender, or facility. Filter by facility and select Roederer Correctional Complex to see only inmates housed there.
Step 4: Click the name to view the full record. The record shows current facility, photo (if available), DOC number, conviction history (last 10 convictions), sentencing information, and projected release date.
Step 5: Write down the DOC number. You’ll need it for every other step, including sending money, writing letters, and setting up Securus calls.
If a search on KOOL doesn’t return the person you’re looking for, a few things may have happened.
They may have been recently transferred. KOOL updates four times a day, so a transfer earlier the same day may not show yet. Try again in a few hours.
They may be in the Assessment Center. Newly arriving KDOC inmates process through Roederer’s Assessment Center before being assigned permanently. KOOL should still show them at Roederer, but recent arrivals may have a brief delay in the system.
They may have been released. If the person was recently released, they may no longer appear in KOOL or may show a completed status.
If you’ve searched and can’t find the person, call Roederer directly at (502) 222-0170. Staff can confirm whether someone is housed there.
The KDOC DOC number is the key identifier for everything else. You need it to deposit money through Access Corrections, to address mail correctly, and to set up a Securus phone account. Getting the DOC number from KOOL is usually the first step.
