Visiting Hours
Visiting hours are not published online by NC DAC for Neuse CI. Call (919) 731-2023 or email [email protected] to confirm the current schedule before you make the trip. Hours can change on holidays and during institutional lockdowns or emergencies.
To get on the approved visitor list, the process starts on the inside. The person requests blank visitor application forms from facility staff and mails them to you. They cannot submit the form on your behalf, and the facility does not send forms directly to outside visitors.
You cannot walk in and apply in person. The application must come through the person inside.
Step 2. Fill Out the Application and Return It
Once you receive the blank form, fill it out completely and send it back to the facility for review. NC DAC will check your background and decide whether to approve you.
What to attach:
- Adults 16 and older: a copy of a valid photo ID (driver’s license, state ID, or passport)
- Children under 16: a copy of a birth certificate
Do not leave anything blank. Incomplete forms can delay the process.
Step 3. Get Approved and Plan Your Visit
NC DAC notifies the person inside whether each visitor was approved or denied. Once you are on the approved list, you can schedule a visit through the facility. Call (919) 731-2023 to confirm scheduling procedures.
Approved visitor lists are updated every 6 months. You may need to resubmit your application when the renewal window opens.
How Many People Can Visit
- Up to 18 visitors may be on the approved list at any one time
- Only 3 visitors may attend a single session
- The person inside gets one session per week, up to 2 hours per session
Plan ahead when coordinating with family members. If more than 3 approved visitors want to come, you may need to take turns across different weeks.
What to Bring
Bring a valid photo ID. Acceptable forms include:
- State-issued driver’s license or ID card
- U.S. passport or passport card
- U.S. military ID
Do not bring purses, bags, large quantities of cash, cell phones, smartwatches, cameras, or AI-enabled glasses. Leave personal belongings secured in your vehicle.
Security Screening
All visitors pass through security before entering the visitation area. Expect:
- Metal detector screening
- Pat search if staff determines it is necessary
- No cell phones, smartwatches, cameras, or recording devices allowed past the checkpoint
Visitors who appear to be under the influence of alcohol or drugs will be denied entry and required to leave the property.
Dress Code
NC DAC enforces a dress code for all visitors. A visit can be denied or ended early if you are not properly dressed. Do not wear:
- Halter tops, tube tops, strapless tops, or tank tops
- Bare midriff clothing
- Fishnet or see-through clothing
- Shorts, skirts, or dresses more than 3 inches above the kneecap
- Wave caps, doo rags, or bandanas
- Spandex clothing
- Pants worn below the waist
- Clothing with gang insignia, profane language, or offensive images
Dress conservatively. When in doubt, call the facility before you travel to confirm whether your clothing is acceptable.
Rules for Minors
Children under 16 must have their birth certificate attached to the visitor application. During the visit, children must stay with an approved adult at all times. Children must be properly dressed and follow the same conduct rules as adults.
If someone other than a parent or legal guardian is bringing a minor, verify with the facility in advance whether additional documentation, such as a notarized permission form, is required.
Conduct During Visits
Visits are a privilege. Staff may end a visit early if:
- A visitor or the person inside behaves disruptively or disrespectfully
- Prohibited contact or exchanges occur
- A visitor appears to be under the influence
You may not pass items to the person inside or receive anything from them during the visit unless it has been approved in advance by facility staff.
What Is Not Allowed
Do not bring contraband. Attempting to bring drugs, alcohol, weapons, or other prohibited items into a NC DAC facility is a felony. You can be arrested and prosecuted on the spot.
Prohibited items include:
- Illegal drugs or alcohol in any form
- Weapons or sharp objects
- Tobacco or tobacco-like products
- Cell phones, cameras, smartwatches, or recording devices
- Food or beverages from outside the facility (unless approved in advance)
Video Visits
If you cannot visit in person, video visits are available through the Getting Out Visits app, operated by ViaPath/GTL. Create an account at sso.gtlconnect.com to browse schedules and book a video session. Video visits let you see and speak with the person in real time from home or anywhere with an internet connection.
Special Circumstances
If you have a medical condition that affects your ability to pass through a metal detector, such as a pacemaker or metal implant, bring a physician’s statement explaining the condition. Contact the facility in advance at (919) 731-2023 to discuss accommodations.
For attorney or clergy visits, contact the facility directly to schedule outside of regular visiting hours.
Before You Travel
Always confirm the visit is still on before making the trip. Use the NC OPI inmate search to verify the person is still at Neuse CI, then call (919) 731-2023 or email [email protected] to confirm your appointment and current hours.
