How to Search the NC DAC OPI
Go to webapps.doc.state.nc.us/opi/offendersearch.do?method=view. Enter the person’s last name and click Search. You can also search by first name, OPUS number, or a combination. If the last name is very common, adding a first name or partial first name helps narrow the list. You do not need an account or any payment to use the search tool.
What the Results Show
Each result links to the inmate’s full record. The record includes:
- Full legal name
- OPUS number (their unique NC DAC ID)
- Current facility (this is where they are held right now)
- Custody status
- Offenses, sentence length, and projected release date
- Any prior NC DAC commitments
Write down the OPUS number. You need it for ConnectNetwork money deposits, ViaPath/GTL phone account setup, and the TextBehind mailing address.
Why Someone Might Not Appear in Search Results
Recently transferred: After a move, the database can take one to several days to update. Keep checking if you know the person was recently moved.
Not yet in NC DAC custody: If the person was just sentenced, it may take a few days for the county to transfer them into NC DAC. Until that transfer happens, they stay in county custody and will not appear in the OPI.
Released or discharged: Released individuals still show in the OPI with a discharged or released status.
Name spelling: Try a partial last name or a different spelling if the search returns no results. Common first names can also cause search misses if you search by first name alone.
Federal inmate: Federal inmates are not in the NC DAC system. Search for them at bop.gov/inmateloc.
What the OPUS Number Is and Why It Matters
The OPUS number is the inmate’s permanent NC DAC identification number. It is assigned when they enter NC DAC custody and stays with them for the entire sentence, even through transfers between facilities. You need this number to:
- Send money through ConnectNetwork
- Set up a ViaPath/GTL phone account linked to the inmate
- Format TextBehind mail correctly (the address line includes the OPUS number)
Write the number exactly as it appears in the OPI results.
Confirming Before You Visit or Send Money
Before driving to Pamlico Correctional Institution, confirm through the OPI that the inmate is still housed there. Transfers can happen without much advance notice, and you may not always find out before you make the trip.
Pamlico C.I. is located at 601 North 3rd Street, Bayboro, NC 28515, about 18 miles east of New Bern in Pamlico County. Call (252) 692-6200 to confirm the inmate’s status if the OPI shows a recent change or if you have any doubt about the location.
What to Do If the Person Is Not Found
If you searched and cannot locate the person, try these steps before calling:
- Double-check the spelling. Try a partial last name or search only by first name to catch spelling variations.
- Search by OPUS number if you already have it. This is the most direct method.
- Try searching without a first name to see all results for a given last name.
- If the person was recently sentenced or transferred from county, allow a few days for the record to update.
- Call Pamlico C.I. at (252) 692-6200 if none of the above resolves it.
Getting Release Notifications
The NC DAC participates in VINE, the national victim notification system. Sign up at vinelink.com or call 1-888-894-8463 to get a text, email, or phone call when the inmate’s custody status changes, including transfers and releases. This is especially useful if you want to know about a transfer before planning a visit or before sending money or mail.
Once you find the inmate’s OPI record, confirm the facility matches Pamlico Correctional Institution before setting up phone, money, or mail. Key details: 601 North 3rd Street, Bayboro, NC 28515, Pamlico County, medium-security, 550-capacity, male facility, operated by NC DAC. Phone: (252) 692-6200.
