How to Search the Stanly County Inmate Roster

Go to stanlysheriff.us/inmateList and enter the person’s first and last name. The Stanly County Sheriff’s Office keeps this roster updated with everyone currently in custody at the Stanly County Detention Center (formally named the Stanly County Ralph McSwain Detention Center).

The search is free and does not require an account. You can search from any device with internet access.

What the Roster Shows

When a match comes up, you’ll see the person’s name, booking number, custody status, and other basic information about their current hold. The booking number is what you need for every step that follows, so write it down or take a screenshot of the page.

What each field means:

• Name: Full legal name as recorded at booking.
• Booking number: The unique ID assigned when the person was processed into the jail. This is what you put on mail and what you enter when sending money.
• Custody status: Whether they are currently in custody or have been released.
• Charges: The charges listed at the time of booking. These can change as the case moves through the courts.

If You Can’t Find the Person

A few things can explain why someone doesn’t show up in the roster:

• They were booked recently. The roster can take up to 24 hours to update after booking. Wait a day and search again.
• You have the name spelled differently. Try variations of the first or last name, or search with just the last name.
• They may have been transferred. If the person was sentenced, they may have been transferred to a state prison facility. Use the North Carolina Department of Adult Correction offender search at doc.nc.gov to check state prison locations.
• They may have been released. If bail was posted or charges were dropped, they may no longer be in custody.

Why You Need the Booking Number

The booking number isn’t just a reference code. You need it for:
