Albany County Jail Inmate Lookup

Albany County publishes no roster of its own, so the county's own answer to this question is a statewide tool run by somebody else. Start with the search below.

Overview

There is no Albany County jail roster. The Sheriff’s Office publishes exactly two corrections pages and neither is a lookup, so a family expecting a county list of who is in custody will not find one. What the county publishes instead is a pointer to VINELink, a statewide service covering the New York City jails, the state prison system and 60 county correctional facilities. It searches by name, which is what you have on the first day.

Searching by Name When a Number Is All Anyone Asks For

New York VINE gives you two ways to identify someone, and you choose between them on the form itself:

  • Name
  • ID Number

That first option matters more than it sounds. Every other thing you will do at this jail is keyed to an ID number: the envelope, the deposit, the phone account. On the first day nobody has that number. VINE will take a name, which makes it the starting point rather than the last step.

Once a record comes back, write the ID number down. It is the key to everything on the rest of this guide.

Why the County Has Nothing of Its Own

We checked rather than assumed. Albany County’s site carries two corrections pages, the main Corrections page and a HALT Act data page. Neither is a roster, and there is no lookup form anywhere on the county domain.

The county’s framing is worth knowing too, because it explains the tone of the tool you land on. Albany presents VINE under its victim services heading, alongside the New York Sheriffs’ Victim Hotline. VINE was built as a victim notification service first and a public lookup second, so the interface talks about registering for alerts more than it talks about finding somebody.

You can use it purely as a search. You do not have to register for notifications to run one.

What VINE Covers, and the Gap That Catches People

The county’s description is accurate: VINELink covers the New York City Department of Correction, the New York State prison system, and 60 county correctional facilities.

That breadth is the reason a search can mislead. A result telling you someone is in state custody rather than Albany County means they have moved systems entirely, and the address, the visiting rules and the deposit routes all change with it. Read the facility name in the result rather than assuming Albany.

Agencies Go Offline, and the Tool Says So

This is a genuine limitation and VINE publishes it on the page.

At the time of writing, the New York service was reporting 8 agencies temporarily offline. The notice explains that during an interruption, information about records and registration functionality are not available, though notifications continue under emergency protocol, and it tells you to contact the facility directly.

So an empty result is not proof that somebody is not in custody. It can mean the agency holding them is not reporting to VINE at that moment. Before concluding anything from a blank search, check the agency status list on VINE, then ring the jail.

When the Search Does Not Answer It

Two numbers, and they do different jobs.

  • New York VINE: 1-888-846-3469. The state line for custody status and notification registration.
  • Appriss Customer First Center: 1-866-277-7477. Staffed 24 hours a day, every day, with live operator support in over 200 languages, for help locating someone or registering.

For anything VINE structurally cannot answer, such as which housing unit someone is in or whether a visit has been approved, the county’s own Inmate Services Unit on 518-869-2611 is the right call. That unit also conducts intake interviews with newly admitted people, so it is the part of the jail closest to a new arrival.

Someone Arrested Tonight

Booking has to finish before a record exists anywhere. A person arrested in the evening and still being processed will not appear in a search run an hour later, and that is the process working normally rather than something going wrong.

The other direction catches people too. A sentence to state prison moves somebody out of Albany County and into the New York State system. They are still findable through VINE, because it covers both, but the facility name in the result changes and so does everything you do next.

A Note on the Full Phone Directory

Albany County publishes a longer list of unit numbers than most jails, and it is worth keeping:

UnitNumber
Inmate Services Unit518-869-2611
Business Office518-869-2606
Classification518-869-2619
Identification518-869-2623
Mental Health Unit518-869-2683
Main facility line518-869-2600

Classification and Identification are the two that most often hold the answer a search result does not, since they handle where somebody is placed and the paperwork attached to them.

Families Also Ask

6 of 8 questions

Q

Can I search Albany County jail by name?

Yes, through VINE. The New York VINE search offers two ways to identify someone, Name or ID Number, and Name is one of them. That matters because on the first day you rarely have a number, and every other process at this jail wants one.

Inmate Search
Q

Does Albany County have its own inmate roster?

No. The Sheriff's Office publishes two corrections pages, the main Corrections page and a HALT Act data page, and neither is a lookup. There is no county search form anywhere. VINELink is what the county itself points families to.

Inmate Search
Q

What is VINELink?

A statewide service covering the New York City jails, the New York State prison system and 60 county correctional facilities. Albany County lists it under victim services, because VINE was built for custody notifications first, but you can use it as a plain search without registering for alerts.

Inmate Search
Q

The search found nothing. Does that mean they are not in custody?

Not necessarily. VINE reports that agencies can go temporarily offline, and while one is, record information is not available through the tool. There were 8 New York agencies offline when this page was verified. Check VINE's agency status list, then call the jail on 518-869-2600 before drawing a conclusion.

Inmate Search
Q

I heard about the arrest an hour ago. Why is there no record?

Booking has to finish before a record exists. Somebody arrested in the evening and still being processed will not show up an hour later. That is the system working as intended. Search again once processing has had time to complete.

Inmate Search
Q

What number do I need for everything else?

The ID number. It goes on the envelope to the Clifton Park P.O. Box, it keys every deposit route, and the phone account asks for it. Take it down the first time a search shows it to you rather than looking it up again each time.

Inmate Search
Q

Who do I call if the search cannot tell me what I need?

New York VINE is 1-888-846-3469, and the Appriss Customer First Center on 1-866-277-7477 runs 24 hours a day with operators in more than 200 languages. For jail-specific questions like housing or intake, the Inmate Services Unit on 518-869-2611 is the county's own line.

Inmate Search
Q

The result says a state prison, not Albany County. What changed?

A sentence to state prison moves somebody out of county custody into the New York State system. VINE covers both, so they are still findable, but the facility in the result is the one that matters now. The mailing address, the visiting rules and the way money reaches them all change at the same time.
