What the County Offers Instead
The Sheriff’s Office runs a full site with fourteen top-level sections and ten corrections sub-pages. None of them is a search.
The single search route the county designates is a sidebar link labelled for the VINE system, which is New York’s custody notification service for county jails. It takes a name or an identification number, and it exists to tell victims when somebody’s custody status changes. Families use it as a lookup, which works, but it was not designed as one.
That matters for how you read a result. VINE is a notification product first. Its interface pushes registration for alerts harder than it pushes searching, and you do not have to register to run a search.
The Two Phone Routes, Which Are Better Than They Look
Most county jails give you a switchboard. Broome publishes a staffed records operation, and it is the more reliable answer here precisely because there is no roster to fall back on.
| What you need | Number |
|---|
| Jail inquiries | 607-778-1911, then option 2 |
| Inmate Records | 607-778-6007 or 607-778-2940 |
| Intake | 607-778-6018 or 607-778-6019 |
| Visitation | 607-778-6142 |
| Commissary | 607-778-2344 |
Inmate Records is the unit that holds what a search would tell you. Intake is the one to try if the arrest was recent, since that is where a new arrival is processed before any record settles anywhere else.
The main line’s option menu is worth memorising: option 1 is dispatch, option 2 is jail inquiries, option 4 is records and option 9 is administration.
Why an Empty VINE Result Proves Less Than You Think
Two separate things can produce nothing.
Booking has not finished. A person taken in an hour ago is still being processed, and no system anywhere shows them yet. That is the process working normally.
The agency is not reporting at that moment. VINE depends on agencies feeding it, and agencies go temporarily offline. While one is, record information is not available through the tool even though the person is in custody.
So a blank search is a reason to call, not a conclusion. Jail inquiries on 607-778-1911, option 2 is the call.
The Sheriff’s App Does This Too, and Is Not Required
Broome County publishes an official Sheriff’s app, launched in July 2023 and built for the Sheriff’s Office by an outside vendor. For families it offers inmate status, bail payment, commissary deposits, phone calls, online mail and photos, all in one place.
It is genuinely official. It is also required for nothing. Every function it carries has a standalone web route, and visiting is arranged inside the jail regardless of what any app says. If it suits you, use it. If it does not, you lose no access by skipping it.
Federal Custody Changes the Answer
Broome holds a substantial federal population and it has grown fast: 21 people in 2024, 48 in 2025, and 52 by July 2026. The facility also appears on the federal immigration detention list, with a separate contact number of 607-778-6018 published for detainee information.
If your person is in federal custody rather than county custody, the county’s own records unit may not be the right desk, and the timetable that moves them is not one Broome controls. Ask which one applies when you call, because it changes who you deal with next.
Where the Population Sits
State figures for July 2026 put the average daily census at 452, against a rated capacity of 536.
The split is the part worth knowing: 333 were unsentenced, 55 were sentenced, 52 were federal, and small numbers were parole violators or awaiting transfer to state prison. Roughly three quarters of the people in this jail are waiting on a court outcome rather than serving a sentence, which is why so much of the traffic through Inmate Records is about court dates rather than release dates.
