Coxsackie Correctional Facility Inmate Search

Two DOCCS prisons share the Coxsackie mailing town and their phone numbers differ by one digit, so reading the facility name literally matters more here than most places. Start with the search below.

Overview

New York runs one lookup for all 41 of its state prisons, keyed on the DIN. Searching is straightforward. What catches people at Coxsackie is the reading: there are two DOCCS prisons in this town, and this one holds a Regional Medical Unit that takes people in from other prisons for treatment, so a result showing Coxsackie may reflect a medical transfer rather than a permanent placement.

Quick Facts

  • 1 One statewide tool at nysdoccslookup.doccs.ny.gov
  • 2 Search by DIN, or by last name and first name
  • 3 The result gives the facility, not the housing unit
  • 4 Greene Correctional Facility shares this mailing town
  • 5 The two prisons' phone numbers differ by one digit
  • 6 The Regional Medical Unit takes transfers from other prisons
  • 7 County jail and New York City populations are not in this tool
  • 8 Capacity and population are not published per facility

Searching, and What Comes Back

The lookup takes two routes in.

By DIN, the Department Identification Number assigned when someone enters state custody. It is exact, it never changes through a transfer, and it is worth writing down the first time you hear it.

By name, last then first. A common surname returns a list to pick through.

The result gives the current facility, the DIN, and sentence and status information. If it reads Coxsackie Correctional Facility, they are in Greene County on Route 9W.

Two Prisons, One Town, One Digit Apart

This is the local trap and it costs people a drive.

They are minutes apart, they share a town and a ZIP, and their main lines differ by a single digit, 8 against 4. Nothing about Greene’s visiting schedule applies here. Greene visits weekends and holidays only and runs a Saturday evening window for its restricted units; Coxsackie does neither.

Read the facility name in the lookup exactly as written. Do not navigate by the town. If it says Greene, our Greene Correctional Facility guide covers that prison instead.

Why Someone Might Appear Here Temporarily

Coxsackie holds a Regional Medical Unit, and under DOCCS Directive 0048 its stated purpose is providing medical care to people transferred in from other facilities.

So a result showing Coxsackie does not always mean a placement. It can mean treatment.

That has three practical consequences for a family:

  • Recheck before every letter and deposit. Someone here for care may return to their home facility without notice.
  • A transfer in may be short. The lookup will not tell you how long, and DOCCS publishes no referral or notification process for the unit.
  • The visiting rules that apply are Coxsackie’s, not those of the prison they came from.

The Units, and Who Each One Takes

DOCCS Directive 0048, dated August 30, 2024, is the facility’s own governing document and it sets out four special units:

  • Special Housing Unit (SHU)
  • Residential Rehabilitation Unit (RRU)
  • Residential Mental Health Unit (RMHU), operated jointly by DOCCS and the New York State Office of Mental Health as a residential mental health treatment unit
  • Regional Medical Unit (RMU)

The facility runs at Mental Health Service Level 2 overall, with the RMHU and the RMU each at Level 1.

The Classification Rule Here Is Narrower Than You Would Expect

Families often assume maximum security means it takes anyone. At Coxsackie it does not.

Directive 0048 sets eligibility at maximum AB or lower. Auburn and Green Haven, the other two maximum security prisons in this part of the state, both accept any security classification.

So Coxsackie is maximum security with a narrower intake than its peers, and someone at the highest classification may be placed elsewhere.

It also takes men 18 and older, where Auburn and Green Haven start at 21 with an exception for 18 to 21 year olds, and it runs programmes specifically for people under 21.

Five Reasons a Coxsackie Search Comes Back Empty

In the order these are usually the answer.

They are in county custody. Someone pre-trial or recently sentenced has not entered the state system. Check the county jail handling the case.

They are in New York City custody. Rikers Island and the city jails run a separate system with a separate lookup. They will not appear here at all.

They are in federal custody. A third system, searched at bop.gov.

The record uses a different spelling or a former name. Try the surname alone and work the list.

They have transferred. The record follows the person, so they appear at the new prison rather than disappearing.

Figures Greene County Keeps to Itself

  • Capacity and current population. DOCCS publishes no per-facility figure, and the monthly Fact Sheet does not break it out.
  • The housing unit. The lookup gives the facility only.
  • How someone is referred into the Regional Medical Unit, or how a family confirms a transfer into it.
  • The number of housing units at this facility.

6 of 7 questions

Q

What is a DIN?

The Department Identification Number assigned when someone enters New York State custody. It stays with them through every transfer and it is what the lookup, the mailroom and the deposit system all key on. If you take one thing from a first phone call, take the DIN.

Q

Is Coxsackie the same as Greene Correctional Facility?

No. Both use the Coxsackie, NY 12051 mailing town and sit minutes apart, and their phone numbers differ by one digit, 518-731-2781 for Coxsackie and 518-731-2741 for Greene. Coxsackie is maximum security and splits visiting by surname; Greene is medium security and splits by the last digit of the DIN.

Q

Why does my person show at Coxsackie when they were somewhere else last week?

Possibly the Regional Medical Unit. Directive 0048 describes it as providing care to people transferred in from other facilities, so a result here can mean treatment rather than placement. Recheck the lookup before every letter and deposit, because they may return to their home prison without notice.

Q

Does the search tell me which unit they are in?

No, only the facility. That matters here because Coxsackie carries four special units, a Special Housing Unit, a Residential Rehabilitation Unit, a Residential Mental Health Unit run jointly with the Office of Mental Health, and the Regional Medical Unit. Ask the person or call 518-731-2781.

Q

What classifications does Coxsackie accept?

Maximum AB or lower, per DOCCS Directive 0048. That is narrower than Auburn and Green Haven, which both accept any security classification despite also being maximum security. Coxsackie also takes men 18 and older, where those two start at 21.

Q

How big is the prison?

DOCCS does not publish capacity or current population for individual facilities, and the monthly Fact Sheet does not break the numbers out by prison. Any figure you find on a third-party site is unofficial, so we do not repeat one here.

Inmate Search
Q

Why can I not find someone who is at Rikers?

Because Rikers is run by the New York City Department of Correction, a separate system with its own lookup. The DOCCS tool covers the 41 state prisons only. Someone can move from city custody into the state system after sentencing, at which point they appear here.
