Start By Asking for Slips
The free posted route has a prerequisite, and skipping it is why deposits go astray.
A money order sent to the Miami lockbox must travel with a JPay deposit slip issued by the facility. The slip carries the coding that ties your money to the right person at the right prison. Without it, the lockbox has an instrument and no reliable way to place it.
The slips come from inside. The person requests them and posts them out, so ask for several at once rather than one at a time.
Four Routes, Compared
| Method | Cost | Speed | Needs |
|---|
| Money order or check to the lockbox | Free | Slowest | A facility deposit slip |
| Online, app or phone through JPay | $1.75 to $4.75 | Fast | A card |
| MoneyGram, in cash | $4.00 | Fast | Receive code 1317 |
| The lockbox at the prison, on a visit day | Free | Fast | To be there |
Posting it
JPay
PO Box 531190
Miami, FL 33153
Cap: $999.99 per money order or check. Larger amounts split across instruments.
Electronically
JPay’s own channels take card payments and post fastest, for $1.75 to $4.75 depending on the amount. The phone line is 1-800-574-5729.
In cash
MoneyGram receive code 1317, a flat $4.00 at an agent. This is the cheapest fast route for a family without a bank card.
At the prison
Every New York prison keeps a lockbox for deposits made in person, with no fee.
This is worth more at Coxsackie than at most prisons. Because two visits a day are allowed here, a family already making the trip to Greene County can visit, deposit for free, and visit again, all in one journey.
What the Money Does
It funds a single commissary account. New York runs commissary on a fortnightly cycle: a buy every two weeks, funds permitting and no disciplinary restriction in the way.
There is no phone account to fund. New York made all calls free on August 1, 2025. If you still hold a prepaid balance with the provider from before that date, you can ask for it back.
Keep It Out of the Envelope
New York inspects incoming mail for exactly this, and Directive 4422 names cash, checks and money orders among the things staff look for.
Money found in the post is returned to sender, with a JPay deposit slip enclosed to show how it should have been sent. Nothing is lost, but weeks are, and the letter may be held up with it.
Packages Are Not the Same Thing
Families conflate sending money with sending goods, and at Coxsackie the second one has a wrinkle.
New York moved to approved vendors only. Packages ship from a vendor by USPS, FedEx or UPS. Nothing may be brought to a visit or posted by a family member. DOCCS publishes a disapproved vendor list rather than an approved one, so the check before ordering is that your vendor is not on it.
Statewide volume limits: three food packages a month, no more than 40 pounds combined, and two non-food packages a year.
The wrinkle here: some unit types are excluded from packages entirely under Directive 4911. Coxsackie carries four special units, including a Residential Mental Health Unit and a Regional Medical Unit. Confirm with the person which unit they are in before ordering anything, because the answer may change what is allowed.
If They Are Only Here for Treatment
Coxsackie’s Regional Medical Unit takes people transferred in from other prisons for care.
If that is why your person is here, the account still follows them, but the deposit slips you are holding are for Coxsackie. When they return to their home facility, check the lookup before the next deposit and get fresh slips.
