Overview

Nothing has to be filed before you visit anyone in New York. There is no application, no approved-visitor list and no background check, which surprises families arriving from other states. What you do need at Coxsackie is the right day, and the right day depends on a surname on the weekends and not at all on a Wednesday. That Wednesday option is recent, and a schedule saved earlier in 2026 will not show it.

Quick Facts

The 2:00 PM cutoff is the hard edge. The room stays open until 3:15, but arriving at 2:15 means no visit.

Wednesday Visiting Is New, and It Is the Easy Day

Worth stating plainly because older information will not carry it.

Wednesdays do not appear anywhere in Coxsackie’s 2026 schedule before late April. The first Wednesday entry is April 29, 2026, and they run continuously from May onward, matching the May 4 effective date.

And Wednesdays work differently from weekends. Weekend dates alternate by surname. Wednesdays are marked open to everyone, whatever letter your person’s last name starts with.

For a family whose weekend letter falls awkwardly, or who cannot travel at a weekend, Wednesday removes the surname problem entirely. It is the single most useful thing on this page.

The Surname Split on Weekends

Weekend dates alternate between A to L and M to Z, by the first letter of the incarcerated person’s last name.

The whole year is published in the facility’s visiting schedule, and DOCCS revises these in place. The current version is marked 04/2026. A copy saved earlier in the year is already out of date, which is exactly how the Wednesday change would be missed.

Check the current schedule against the surname before every trip. The pattern does not repeat predictably from month to month.

Two Visits a Day

Coxsackie publishes a maximum of two visits per day, which is more than its neighbours allow.

PrisonVisits per day
CoxsackieTwo
Green HavenOne
AuburnNo published cap

That matters for a family travelling a distance: two separate visits in one trip is possible here, subject to the room having space.

Special Housing, and an Undefined Week

One non-legal visit per seven day period, during normal visiting hours.

Coxsackie states the period without defining when it starts, unlike Green Haven, which runs a fixed Friday to Thursday week, and Auburn, which runs it rolling from the end of the last visit. Ask the facility on 518-731-2781 how the week is counted here rather than assuming either neighbour’s rule.

Nobody Applies to Visit in New York

The state runs no visitor application, no approved-visitor list and no background check on visitors. DOCCS’s own position is that with little exception anyone may visit during visiting hours, with proper identification, if the person being visited agrees.

The one form that exists statewide is Form 4932A, and it is not an application to visit. It is the medical exemption from the body scanner, filed in advance with DOCCS Central Office Health Services in Albany, and an approval covers every facility in the state.

Scanning, and What Declining Costs Here

Every visitor passes a body image scanner before a contact visit, statewide under Directive 4403.

Declining does not end the visit. It reduces it:

  • Non-contact, through a barrier
  • Two visitors rather than three
  • Two hours rather than the full window
  • No embrace at any point

When the Room Fills Up

Coxsackie publishes the overcrowding procedure, in this order:

  1. Staff ask for volunteers to end their visit early.
  2. Visitors living within 100 miles are ended after three hours, earliest arrivals first.
  3. Visitors who travelled more than 100 miles are ended after three hours, earliest arrivals first.

Visits with special permission, and visits to someone who has not had one in six months, get particular consideration from the Superintendent or Officer of the Day before anyone is asked to leave.

A family driving up from New York City or across from Massachusetts sits in the protected second tier.

Do Not Use Greene’s Schedule

The other DOCCS prison in this town is Greene Correctional Facility, medium security, at 165 Plank Road, on 518-731-2741.

Greene visits weekends and holidays only, splits by the last digit of the DIN rather than by surname, and runs a Saturday evening window for its restricted units. None of that applies at Coxsackie. Confirm the facility name in the lookup before working from any schedule. Greene’s own rules are in our Greene visiting guide.

Extended Family Visiting Is Not Available Here

Coxsackie does not appear on the DOCCS Family Reunion Program facility list.

Auburn and Green Haven both do. If extended private family visits matter, that is a fact worth knowing before a transfer request rather than after one. The programme is governed by Directive 4500.

Driving to Greene County

11260 Route 9W, Coxsackie, NY 12051, in Greene County on the west bank of the Hudson, roughly thirty miles south of Albany.

DOCCS publishes a single Google Maps link for directions and nothing else, no written route, no parking guidance and no information about a visitor hospitality centre.

On buses, DOCCS publishes a disclaimer rather than a service: privately operated lines run to many prisons, seats must be reserved in advance, and the department names no companies and accepts no responsibility for them. A free roundtrip visitor bus, run in partnership with the New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision, serves 18 New York prisons, and Coxsackie is not one of them.

Visiting Details Coxsackie Omits

  • How the seven day Special Housing Unit period is counted.
  • Whether Wednesday visiting has the same 2:00 PM cutoff as the weekend, though nothing suggests otherwise.
  • Parking, lockers, vending or a children’s area at this facility.
  • Whether a visitor hospitality centre operates on site.
  • Holiday arrangements. The schedule marks holidays but the visiting days line names only weekends and Wednesdays.

Four Questions Before You Travel

  1. What does this month’s schedule say for our surname?
  2. Is a Wednesday easier for us than waiting for our weekend letter?
  3. Is my person in the Special Housing Unit, and how is the week counted?
  4. Where do I leave my phone and keys?

Families Also Ask

6 of 9 questions

Q

What are the visiting hours at Coxsackie?

9:00 AM to 3:15 PM, with a latest arrival time of 2:00 PM. Visiting runs on weekends and, since the schedule changed effective May 4, 2026, on Wednesdays as well. The room stays open past the cutoff for people already registered, but arriving after 2:00 PM means no visit.

Visitation
Q

Can I visit on a Wednesday?

Yes, and it is the easier day. Wednesday visiting started in 2026, with the first Wednesday appearing on April 29 and running continuously afterwards. Unlike weekend dates, Wednesdays are open to everyone regardless of the incarcerated person's surname.

Visitation
Q

What is the A to L and M to Z split?

Weekend visiting dates alternate by the first letter of the incarcerated person's last name, some for A to L and others for M to Z. Wednesdays are exempt and open to all. The pattern is published in the facility's annual schedule, which DOCCS revises in place, so check the current version rather than a saved copy.

Visitation
Q

How many visits can I have in a day?

Two, which is more than most New York prisons permit. Green Haven allows one a day and Auburn publishes no cap. Each visit is limited to three adult visitors plus one child under five who sits on an adult's lap.

Visitation
Q

Do I need to apply or be approved first?

No. New York operates no visitor application, no approved-visitor list and no background check on visitors. You need current photo identification and you need to arrive before 2:00 PM. The only statewide visitor form is Form 4932A, the medical exemption from the body scanner.

Visitation
Q

What happens if I decline the body scanner?

You still visit, but under reduced terms: non-contact through a barrier, two visitors instead of three, two hours instead of the full window, and no embrace. If there is a medical reason you cannot be scanned, Form 4932A is filed in advance with DOCCS Central Office Health Services in Albany and an approval covers every facility.

Visitation
Q

My person is in the Special Housing Unit. Can I still visit?

Yes, one non-legal visit per seven day period during normal visiting hours. Coxsackie does not publish how that seven day period is counted, unlike Green Haven which uses a fixed Friday to Thursday week and Auburn which counts rolling from the last visit. Call 518-731-2781 and ask rather than assuming.

Visitation
Q

Is there a Family Reunion Program at Coxsackie?

No. Coxsackie is not on the DOCCS Family Reunion Program list, though Auburn and Green Haven both are. Extended private family visits are not available here, which is worth knowing before a transfer request rather than after one.

Visitation
Q

What happens if the visiting room is full?

Coxsackie publishes the order. Volunteers are asked first. Then visitors living within 100 miles are ended after three hours, earliest arrivals first, and only after that are visitors who travelled more than 100 miles. Someone who has not had a visit in six months gets special consideration before any of that.
