Fishkill Correctional Facility, NY

Physical Address 18 Strack Drive, Beacon, NY 12508

A medium security prison in Beacon, Dutchess County, holding roughly the population of a small town on the grounds of the old Matteawan State Hospital. Fishkill runs a Regional Medical Unit, a long-term care unit and a unit for the cognitively impaired, so it houses people whose classification would otherwise put them somewhere else entirely.

  • 2 Mail to an incarcerated person goes to 271 Matteawan Road, P.O. Box 1245.
  • 3 Both are Beacon, both are official, and they are not interchangeable.

Three Visiting Schedules Under One Roof

  • 2 Holidays are open to everyone, whatever the number.
  • 3 The dates are published a year at a time in a schedule PDF.
  • 4 Getting the parity wrong means driving to Beacon for nothing.

Calls Cost Nothing Now

  • 1 New York made all calls free on August 1, 2025.
  • 2 Three calls a week of up to fifteen minutes, credited on Saturdays.

  • 4 There is no family account to fund and nothing to top up.

A Prison Built Around Its Medical Unit

  • 1 The Regional Medical Unit holds long-term care and a cognitively impaired unit.

  • 4 Puppies Behind Bars and a hospice program both operate on site.

Nobody Applies to Visit in New York

  • 1 There is no visitor application and no approved-visitor list.
  • 2 Bring current photo ID, arrive inside the window, and that is the process.
  • 3 Every visitor passes a body image scanner before a contact visit.
  • 4 Declining the scanner means a non-contact visit, two visitors, two hours.

What You Need to Know

Verified from the NYSDOCCS inmate lookup See our sources ›

New York runs one statewide lookup keyed on the DIN, the Department Identification Number. It tells you which facility someone is in, and at Fishkill it will not tell you which unit, which is the piece you need before you plan a visit. People move between general confinement, the Regional Medical Unit and the rehabilitation units, and the visiting hours differ for each.

Weekends and weekday holidays, with three separate schedules by unit and a weekend split by the last digit of the DIN. No application, no approved-visitor list, current photo ID and a body scanner. Three visitors plus one child under five who sits on a lap, one visit a week, two in a week containing a holiday.

JPay handles deposits for every New York prison. A money order to the Miami lockbox costs nothing but needs a deposit slip from the facility and caps at $999.99. Online and phone deposits post faster and carry a fee of $1.75 to $4.75. MoneyGram receive code 1317 takes cash for $4. The department itself takes no cut.

Free since August 1, 2025, which changed what families need to do more than any other policy in the state. There is no account to open and no balance to keep topped up. Three calls a week of up to fifteen minutes are credited on Saturdays, later calls run to thirty minutes, and the window is 7:00 AM to 11:00 PM on fifteen approved numbers.

Letters go to 271 Matteawan Road, P.O. Box 1245, not to the street address, and they arrive as paper because New York inspects mail at the prison rather than scanning it elsewhere. No Polaroids, no stamps, no letters passed on from a third party, and printed or photocopied material is capped at five pages. Cash or a money order in the envelope is returned to sender.

Q

What address do I use to write to someone at Fishkill?

271 Matteawan Road, P.O. Box 1245, Beacon, NY 12508. That is not the same as the prison's street address at 18 Strack Drive, and NYSDOCCS publishes both. Put the person's full name and DIN on the envelope, and your own return address in the top left corner.

Mail & Photos
Q

What are the visiting hours?

It depends which unit your person is in. General population visits run 8:15 AM to 3:00 PM with a 2:15 PM last arrival. The Regional Medical Unit runs 8:30 AM to 2:00 PM with a 1:00 PM last arrival. The Residential Rehabilitation Unit and Special Housing Unit visit 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM on Saturdays only. Visiting is weekends and weekday holidays, effective June 9, 2026.

Visitation
Q

Why was I turned away on a Saturday?

Weekend visits at Fishkill are divided by the last digit of the incarcerated person's DIN, odd on some dates and even on others. Holidays are open to everyone. The parity for every date is published in the facility's annual visiting schedule, so check the date against the DIN before you travel.

Visitation
Q

Do I need to apply before I visit?

No. New York does not operate a visitor application or an approved-visitor list, which makes it unusual among state systems. You need current photo identification and you need to arrive inside the window for your person's unit. Every visitor passes a body image scanner, and declining it means a non-contact visit rather than no visit.

Visitation
Q

How much do phone calls cost?

Nothing. New York made all calls free on August 1, 2025, and families no longer need an account with the phone provider. Each person gets three calls a week of up to fifteen minutes, credited on Saturdays, and calls after those are capped at thirty minutes. The calling window is 7:00 AM to 11:00 PM.

Phone Calls
Q

How do I send money?

Through JPay. The free route is a money order or check posted to the lockbox at JPay, PO Box 531190, Miami, FL 33153, with a deposit slip from the facility, capped at $999.99 per instrument. Online, app and phone deposits carry a fee. MoneyGram receive code 1317 also works. NYSDOCCS takes no commission on any of it.

Send Money
Q

Why is someone classified maximum security held at a medium security prison?

Because Fishkill's units accept different classifications. General confinement takes medium or lower, but the Regional Medical Unit and the Unit for the Cognitively Impaired accept maximum B or lower, and the S Block Special Housing Unit and Residential Rehabilitation Unit accept maximum A or lower. DOCCS Directive 0051 sets this out unit by unit.

Inmate Search
Q

Can I send a package?

Not directly. New York moved to approved vendors only, so packages have to ship from a vendor by USPS, FedEx or UPS rather than from you. Nothing can be brought to a visit or posted by a family member. DOCCS publishes a disapproved vendor list rather than an approved one, which is worth reading before you order.

Mail & Photos
Q

Is Fishkill the same as Downstate Correctional Facility?

No, and the two are easy to confuse. Fishkill Correctional Facility is at 18 Strack Drive in Beacon. Downstate Correctional Facility is on Red Schoolhouse Road in the town of Fishkill, a different site. Green Haven Correctional Facility is also in Dutchess County, at Stormville. Confirm the facility in the DOCCS lookup before you post anything or set off.
