No Application, and That Is Not a Mistake
Families arriving from another state’s system keep looking for the form. There is not one.
New York’s own wording is that with little exception, anyone can visit as long as it is during visiting hours, the visitor has proper identification, and the person being visited agrees to the visit. No paperwork goes in beforehand. No list is maintained that you have to be added to. No background check runs on you.
The only form in the whole visiting process is Form 4932A, and it is not an application to visit. It is the medical exemption from the body scanner, and only people who need that exemption file it.
The Three Schedules
Which one applies depends entirely on where your person is housed, and the lookup will not tell you.
| Unit | Days | Hours | Latest arrival |
|---|
| General population | Weekends and weekday holidays | 8:15 AM to 3:00 PM | 2:15 PM |
| Regional Medical Unit | Weekends and weekday holidays | 8:30 AM to 2:00 PM | 1:00 PM |
| Residential Rehabilitation Unit and Special Housing Unit | Saturdays only | 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM | |
The Regional Medical Unit cutoff is the one that catches people out. 1:00 PM, a full hour and a quarter earlier than general population, for a unit whose visitors are often travelling furthest because their person is seriously unwell.
The Odd and Even Split
This is the part that sends families home.
Weekend visits at Fishkill are divided by the last digit of the incarcerated person’s DIN. Some Saturdays and Sundays are odd-numbered DINs, others are even. Weekday holidays are open to everyone regardless of the number.
The whole year is published in advance in the facility’s visiting schedule, which DOCCS updates in place. The current version is the one effective June 9, 2026, and it supersedes a version issued in December 2025, so a PDF saved earlier in the year may already be wrong.
For which dates are odd and which are even, open the dated schedule on the NYSDOCCS Fishkill page. It marks every weekend date Odd or Even, and holidays as open to all.
Check the current schedule against the DIN before every trip. The parity is not predictable from the date, and it changes from month to month.
How Many People Can Come
Three visitors, plus one child under five who sits on an adult’s lap.
One visit per day, and one visit per week, except in a week that contains a holiday, when two are allowed.
What Happens If the Visiting Room Fills Up
Fishkill publishes its overcrowding procedure, which most prisons do not, and the order it works in is worth knowing before you set off.
- Staff ask for volunteers to end their visit early.
- If nobody volunteers, visitors who live within 100 miles are ended after three hours, in the order they arrived.
- If space is still short, visitors who travelled more than 100 miles are ended after three hours, in the order they arrived.
Visits with special permission, and visits to someone who has not had a visit in six months, get particular consideration from the Superintendent or the Officer of the Day before anyone ends them.
The practical read for a family coming up from New York City: you are in the protected second tier, not the first. Someone driving over from Poughkeepsie is asked to leave before you are.
The Body Scanner, and What Declining Costs
Every visitor passes a body image scanner before a contact visit. This is statewide, under Directive 4403.
You can decline. Declining does not end the visit, but it changes it:
- Non-contact only, through a barrier
- Two visitors rather than three
- Two hours rather than the full window
- No embrace at any point
If there is a medical reason you cannot be scanned, Form 4932A is the exemption request, effective July 22, 2025. It goes in advance to DOCCS Central Office Health Services, Harriman State Campus, 1220 Washington Ave., Albany, NY 12226-2050, marked for the attention of the Body Scanner Exemption Request. An approval applies at every facility in the state, not just this one.
Video Visiting, Which Is Not What It Sounds Like
Fishkill is one of 21 New York prisons offering video visiting, and it is worth understanding what that means before getting hopeful.
You do not do it from home. Families travel to an approved community-based video visitation site. Eligibility on the inside depends on programme participation and a clean disciplinary record.
The Family Reunion Program
Fishkill takes part in New York’s Family Reunion Program, the extended private visits governed by Directive 4500.
Eligibility normally requires three visits in the past twelve months to establish a visiting pattern, with discretion applied for families who live more than 300 miles away. That is the practical argument for logging ordinary visits early rather than waiting.
Getting to Beacon
The prison is at 18 Strack Drive, Beacon, NY 12508.
By train, the nearest station is Beacon, on Metro-North’s Hudson Line, roughly 78 minutes from midtown Manhattan. The station is accessible from the Railroad Drive entrance, has ticket machines and no ticket office, and connects to Dutchess County Public Transit and the Newburgh-Beacon Ferry.
On buses from the city, DOCCS publishes a disclaimer rather than a service. Privately operated lines run to many prisons, seats must be reserved in advance, and the department names no companies and accepts no responsibility for them. Separately, Fishkill is one of 18 New York prisons served by a free roundtrip visitor bus, run in partnership with the New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision.
