Green Haven Correctional Facility Inmate Search

Green Haven takes intake and houses people in transit, so a result here can be a stop on the way somewhere rather than a placement. Start with the search below.

Overview

Finding someone in New York is a single search against a single statewide tool, and the DIN is the key to it. What families should understand about Green Haven specifically is that it moves people. The prison takes intake from certain counties and it sends, receives and temporarily houses people travelling between facilities or going to court, so a result here is not always a placement that will hold.

Quick Facts

  • 1 One statewide tool at nysdoccslookup.doccs.ny.gov
  • 2 Search by DIN, or by last name and first name
  • 3 Green Haven accepts any security classification
  • 4 It is an intake facility for state-ready people from certain counties
  • 5 It also houses people in transit between facilities
  • 6 The result gives the facility, never the housing unit
  • 7 Capacity and population are not published per facility
  • 8 Men 21 and older, with an exception for 18 to 21

The Search Itself

Two ways in, at nysdoccslookup.doccs.ny.gov.

By DIN. The Department Identification Number follows a person through every move in the New York system. It is exact and it is worth writing down the first time anyone says it to you.

By name, last then first. Common surnames return a list.

The result gives the current facility, the DIN, and sentence and status information.

Why the Answer Might Not Hold

Green Haven has two roles that make it less stable than an ordinary placement, and DOCCS Directive 0053 names both.

It is an intake facility for state-ready people from certain counties. Someone newly received into state custody may land here first.

It sends, receives and temporarily houses people in transit, moving between facilities or travelling to court.

So a lookup result reading Green Haven can mean three different things: this is where they are serving their sentence, this is where they were received, or this is where they are stopping.

The practical instruction is the same in all three cases. Check the lookup before every letter, every deposit and every trip to Stormville. Nothing notifies you when someone moves.

One thing Directive 0053 does not do is name the counties. It says “certain counties” and stops there, unlike Auburn’s directive which lists ten by name. We are not going to guess at them.

Any Classification, Which Is Broader Than It Sounds

Green Haven accepts any security classification under Directive 0053.

That is worth comparing, because families assume maximum security prisons are interchangeable and they are not:

PrisonClassification accepted
Green HavenAny
AuburnAny
CoxsackieMaximum AB or lower

So Coxsackie, also maximum security and an hour north, has a narrower intake than this one.

Green Haven takes men 21 and older, with 18 to 21 year olds eligible under Part 110 of the regulations.

The Units, and Who Is in Them

Directive 0053, dated December 22, 2025, is the longest facility directive of its neighbours and it sets out an unusual mix:

  • A Special Housing Unit and a protective custody unit. The protective custody unit is the one neither Coxsackie nor Auburn publishes.
  • An Intermediate Care Program and a Transitional Intermediate Care Program, with multiple-occupancy rooms and a dormitory.
  • A Residential Crisis Treatment Program, observation cells and dormitory beds.
  • Designation as a Residential Treatment Facility.
  • Mental Health Service Level 1, with Office of Mental Health staff on site 8:00 AM to 10:00 PM.

General confinement, protective custody and the Special Housing Unit are single cells.

Built Flat, and DOCCS Says Why

One sentence in Directive 0053 explains a placement decision, which the department almost never does:

Green Haven is a flat facility, which allows for the housing of incarcerated individuals who use a wheelchair for independence.

If your person uses a wheelchair, that sentence is probably why they are here rather than somewhere else. It is also the most concrete accessibility statement DOCCS makes about any prison in this part of the state.

Why a Stormville Search Might Return Nothing

They are in county custody. Pre-trial or newly sentenced people are not in the state system yet.

They are in New York City custody. Rikers and the city jails run a separate lookup entirely.

They are in federal custody. A third system, at bop.gov.

The record spells the name differently, or uses a former name. Search the surname alone.

They have moved. The record follows them rather than vanishing, so search by name and read whichever facility comes back.

Do Not Confuse the Dutchess County Prisons

Three DOCCS facilities sit in or near Dutchess County and the names blur:

  • Green Haven Correctional Facility is at Stormville, maximum security.
  • Fishkill Correctional Facility is at Beacon, medium security, and runs three separate visiting schedules by unit.
  • Downstate Correctional Facility is in the town of Fishkill, which is not the same place as Fishkill Correctional Facility.

Read the facility name in the lookup exactly rather than navigating by county.

Figures Green Haven Does Not Release

  • Capacity and current population. No per-facility figure appears on the location page, in Directive 0053, or in the monthly Fact Sheet.
  • The housing unit, which the lookup never gives.
  • Which counties Green Haven takes intake from. The directive says “certain counties” without listing them.
  • How long someone typically stays in transit here.

6 of 7 questions

Q

What is a DIN and why does it matter?

The Department Identification Number assigned when someone enters New York State custody. It follows them through every transfer and it keys the lookup, the mailroom and the deposit system. At a prison that handles intake and transit, having the DIN rather than just a name makes every check faster.

Q

Why does my person keep appearing and disappearing from Green Haven?

Because the prison does two things beyond ordinary placement. Directive 0053 describes it as an intake facility for state-ready people from certain counties, and says it sends, receives and temporarily houses people in transit between facilities or going to court. A result here can be a stop rather than a placement.

Inmate Search
Q

Which counties does Green Haven take intake from?

DOCCS does not say. Directive 0053 refers to certain counties without listing them, unlike Auburn's directive which names ten. Rather than guess, the safe approach is to check the lookup, which tells you where someone actually is regardless of why they were sent.

Q

What security classifications does Green Haven take?

Any, under Directive 0053. Auburn is the same. Coxsackie, also maximum security, is narrower at maximum AB or lower. So two maximum security prisons an hour apart have genuinely different intakes.

Inmate Search
Q

My person uses a wheelchair. Why were they sent here?

Most likely the building. Directive 0053 states that Green Haven is a flat facility, which allows for the housing of incarcerated individuals who use a wheelchair for independence. DOCCS rarely explains why a site suits a particular need, and this is one of the few places it does.

Inmate Search
Q

Is Green Haven the same as Fishkill or Downstate?

No, and all three are easy to confuse. Green Haven is at Stormville and is maximum security. Fishkill Correctional Facility is at Beacon and is medium security. Downstate Correctional Facility is in the town of Fishkill, a different site again. Read the facility name in the lookup rather than going by county.

Inmate Search
Q

How many people are held at Green Haven?

DOCCS does not publish capacity or population for individual prisons, and the monthly Fact Sheet does not break the figures out. Any number you find elsewhere is unofficial, so we do not repeat one.
