7:30 AM is the earliest opening of any maximum security prison in this part of the state. Coxsackie opens at 9:00 and Auburn at 8:30 on Wednesdays. If you are coming up from the city, an early start here buys real time.
The trade is the other end. 1:30 PM is the cutoff, an hour earlier than Coxsackie’s.
The 10:30 Count
This is the detail that explains most confused mornings here, and Green Haven is the only local prison that publishes it.
Visit processing pauses for the facility count at approximately 10:30 AM, and resumes once the count clears.
So if you arrive at twenty past ten and find yourself waiting with no explanation, that is what is happening. You have not been forgotten and you have not done anything wrong. The department does not publish how long the pause usually lasts.
The practical read: arrive before 10:00 and you are likely through before the pause. Arrive after it clears and you are fine. Arrive at 10:25 and you wait.
Use the Side Entrance
Green Haven publishes an entrance instruction, which neither Coxsackie nor Auburn does:
Visitors enter the Visitor Processing area through the side entrance, the handicap entrance, and are screened on entering.
Worth knowing before you arrive at a large maximum security perimeter looking for a way in.
One Visit a Day
Green Haven permits one visit per day, and that is the tightest of the three maximum security prisons nearby.
| Prison | Visits per day |
|---|
| Green Haven | One |
| Coxsackie | Two |
| Auburn | No published cap |
For a family travelling a long way, that is worth factoring in. One visit here is the whole trip.
Weekends Split by Surname, Wednesdays Do Not
Weekend dates alternate between A to L and M to Z, by the first letter of the incarcerated person’s last name.
Wednesdays are open to everyone. The schedule PDF states it outright: Wednesday visitation days are available to all incarcerated individuals regardless of last name.
Unlike at Coxsackie, where Wednesdays only started in 2026, Green Haven’s Wednesdays run from the start of the year. They are an established part of the schedule rather than a new addition.
The annual schedule is published as a PDF and DOCCS revises these in place, so check the current one rather than a saved copy.
Special Housing, and the Friday to Thursday Week
One non-legal visit per seven day period, and here it is non-contact.
Green Haven is also specific about how the week is counted, where Coxsackie is not:
Each week starts on a Friday and ends on a Thursday.
That fixed window matters for planning. Auburn runs the same entitlement on a rolling basis from the end of the last visit, which produces a completely different calendar.
Nothing to File Beforehand
New York operates no visitor application, no approved-visitor list and no background check on visitors, anywhere in the state. DOCCS’s position is that with little exception anyone may visit during visiting hours, with proper identification, if the person being visited agrees.
The only statewide visitor form is Form 4932A, which is the medical exemption from the body scanner rather than an application to visit. It goes in advance to DOCCS Central Office Health Services in Albany and an approval covers every facility.
Every visitor passes a body image scanner before a contact visit, under Directive 4403.
Declining reduces the visit rather than ending it: non-contact, two visitors instead of three, two hours instead of the full window, and no embrace.
When the Room Is Full
The overcrowding procedure, in order:
- Volunteers are asked to end their visit early.
- Visitors living within 100 miles are ended after three hours, earliest arrivals first.
- Visitors who travelled more than 100 miles are ended after three hours, earliest arrivals first.
Visits with special permission, and visits to someone who has not had one in six months, get particular consideration before anyone is asked to leave.
A family driving up from New York City is in the protected second tier, which at seventy miles is most people visiting here.
Extended Family Visits Are Available
Green Haven takes part in the Family Reunion Program, New York’s extended private family visits, and its own Directive 0053 names it among Family Services.
Eligibility normally requires three visits in the previous twelve months to establish a visiting pattern, with discretion for families living more than 300 miles away. Directive 4500 governs it.
That is an argument for logging ordinary visits early rather than waiting until the programme matters to you.
Getting to Stormville
594 Route 216, Stormville, NY 12582, in Dutchess County, about seventy miles north of New York City.
DOCCS publishes a Google Maps link and nothing more. No written directions, no parking guidance, no mention of a visitor hospitality centre.
On buses, the department publishes a disclaimer rather than a service. Privately operated lines serve many prisons, seats must be reserved ahead, and DOCCS names no companies and takes no responsibility for them. Green Haven is one of 18 New York prisons a free roundtrip visitor bus serves, run in partnership with the New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision.
Visiting Details Green Haven Omits
- How long the 10:30 count pause usually lasts.
- Parking, lockers, vending or a children’s area at this facility.
- Whether a visitor hospitality centre operates here.
- Holiday arrangements. The schedule marks holidays but the visiting days line names only Wednesdays and weekends.
- Capacity or population, which DOCCS does not publish per prison.
Four Things to Settle Before You Set Off
- What does this month’s schedule say for our surname, or is a Wednesday simpler?
- Can we be through processing before 10:30?
- Is my person in the Special Housing Unit, and does the Friday to Thursday week affect us?
- Where is the side entrance from the car park?
