Get the Slip First
The free posted route will not work without it.
A money order sent to the Miami lockbox has to travel with a JPay deposit slip issued by the facility. The slip carries the coding tying your money to the right person at the right prison. Without it the lockbox has an instrument and no reliable way to place it.
Slips come from inside. The person requests them and posts them out, so ask for several at once, particularly here, where a transfer may mean you need slips for somewhere else before long.
Four Ways In, Ranked by Cost
| Method | Cost | Speed | Needs |

| Online, app or phone through JPay | $1.75 to $4.75 | Fast | A card |
| MoneyGram, in cash | $4.00 | Fast | Receive code 1317 |
| The lockbox at the prison, on a visit day | Free | Fast | To be there |

At the prison
Every New York prison keeps a lockbox for in-person deposits, with no fee. If you are already driving to Stormville, this is free and immediate.
Bear in mind Green Haven allows one visit a day, so unlike Coxsackie there is no visit-deposit-visit pattern to exploit here.
Why Timing Matters More at This Prison
Green Haven is an intake facility and a transit point. Directive 0053 says it sends, receives and temporarily houses people moving between facilities or going to court.
The account itself follows the person, so money is not lost. What can go wrong is slower than that:
- A posted money order is the slowest route. If someone moves while it is in transit, it still lands in their account, but the deposit slip you used was for Green Haven and the next one needs to be for wherever they are.
- Fresh slips take time to arrive. Ask for spares while they are still here.
- Check the lookup before the next deposit, not just before the next letter.
If they are only here in transit, a fast electronic route is worth the fee.
What the Money Buys
A single commissary account. New York runs commissary on a fortnightly cycle: a buy every two weeks, funds permitting and no disciplinary restriction in the way.
There is no phone account to fund. New York made all calls free on August 1, 2025. A prepaid balance left over from before that date can be refunded on request from the provider.
Never in the Envelope
Directive 4422 has staff inspect incoming mail for cash, checks and money orders.
Money found in the post is returned to sender with a JPay deposit slip enclosed, showing how it should have been sent. Nothing is lost, but weeks are, and the letter may be held with it.
Packages Are a Different System
Not mail, not money, and the rules are their own.
Family members cannot post packages to Green Haven. New York moved to approved vendors only, shipping by USPS, FedEx or UPS, and nothing can be brought to a visit.
Statewide limits: three food packages a month, no more than 40 pounds combined, and two non-food packages a year.
DOCCS publishes a disapproved vendor list rather than an approved one, so the check is that your vendor is not on it.
Green Haven carries a Special Housing Unit, a protective custody unit, an Intermediate Care Program and a Residential Crisis Treatment Program, and Directive 4911 excludes some unit types from packages entirely. Confirm the unit before ordering.
- A commissary spending cap, here or statewide.
- A commissary price list for Green Haven.
- Any deposit minimum.
- How long a posted deposit takes to clear.
