Sending Money to Marcy Correctional Facility

A deposit for someone at Marcy is matched to the DIN at a lockbox in Miami, so the two post boxes that decide where a letter lands have no bearing on the money. Connect with your loved one in minutes.

Overview

New York runs deposits for every state prison through JPay, so nothing about the process is specific to Old River Road. That helps here. The two-box confusion that costs families a letter at Marcy cannot touch a deposit, because the money is matched to a DIN in Miami and follows the person wherever the state moves them.

Quick Facts

  • 1 Deposits run through JPay for every New York state prison
  • 2 Six routes in, and two of them are free
  • 3 Money order or check by post is free, up to $999.99 each
  • 4 JPay lockbox, PO Box 531190, Miami, FL 33153
  • 5 A JPay deposit slip has to go in with it
  • 6 Visitor lockbox at Marcy takes $50 cash a day in total
  • 7 Online, app and phone cost $1.75 to $4.75 and post faster
  • 8 Calls are already free, so the balance is not for phoning

Start With the DIN, Not the Address

Every deposit is matched to a Department Identification Number, never to a name and never to a facility.

Two people can share a name. Nobody shares a DIN. Run the lookup, write the number down, then send.

The useful side effect at Marcy is that the address problem disappears. P.O. Box 3600 and P.O. Box 5000 matter enormously for a letter and not at all for a deposit, because the deposit never comes to Old River Road.

The two free routes are slower and take larger amounts. The paid ones post faster and cap lower. For most families the post is fine, because commissary is bought on a schedule anyway.

The Deposit Slip Is Not Optional

DOCCS publishes a JPay deposit slip in English and Spanish, and it goes in the envelope with the money order.

Without it, a payment arrives with nothing attached to say who it belongs to. The slip carries the DIN and the DIN is what the deposit is matched against. It costs nothing to include and it is the difference between money that posts and money that sits.

The Lockbox Inside, and a Hard Cap

Marcy has a visitor deposit lockbox like every New York state prison. It takes cash up to $50 a day in total, along with money orders and checks, and there is no fee.

Read that cap carefully, because it is easy to get wrong. It is $50 for the day, however many of you are visiting, not $50 each. Three adults arriving together still leave $50 between them in cash.

The other thing shaping this at Marcy is the weekend rota. Visits alternate by DIN, so a family on the wrong fortnight has no lockbox day at all. Anyone relying on it alone is limited by the calendar, not by the cap.

The lockbox is not processed at the prison. DOCCS forwards what goes in it to JPay, so it takes the same path and timing as a posted money order.

Never in the Letter

Money does not go in an envelope to P.O. Box 3600.

Incoming mail is opened and inspected specifically for cash, checks and money orders. Enclosing money does not speed anything up. It gets the money intercepted and it delays the letter.

The letter goes to Marcy. The money goes to Miami.

What the Balance Buys

The account covers commissary: food, coffee, hygiene items, stationery, stamps and over-the-counter basics.

It also covers secure messaging stamps through JPay’s kiosk service at the terminals and tablets.

What it no longer covers is the telephone. New York made calls from state prisons free to families on 1 August 2025, so an empty balance does not mean silence.

Packages Are a Separate Budget

Packages come directly from an approved vendor and ship by USPS, FedEx or UPS, and families cannot post or carry one in.

The allowance is two non-food packages a year and three food packages a month, capped at a combined 40 pounds. Funding commissary does not use up a package allowance, and ordering a package does not draw on the balance.

A Transfer Does Not Break It

New York moves people between prisons and the account follows, because JPay holds it against the DIN and not the building.

The letter address does change, and at Marcy a move can be as short as five street numbers. Check the lookup before you post.

How to Send Money to Marcy, Step by Step

This is the free route, start to finish.

  1. Run the lookup and write down the full name and the DIN.
  2. Print the JPay deposit slip from the DOCCS account deposits page, in English or Spanish.
  3. Fill in the slip: full name, DIN, and the facility.
  4. Buy a money order for up to $999.99, made out as the slip directs.
  5. Put the slip and the money order in one envelope. Nothing else goes in it.
  6. Post it to JPay, PO Box 531190, Miami, FL 33153.
  7. Keep the money order stub. It is the only proof you have if the deposit has to be traced.

If you need it there faster, the online, app and phone routes cost $1.75 to $4.75 and take $2 to $300 at a time.

What Money Cannot Say

A funded account buys coffee and shampoo. It does not tell anyone they are thought about.

Pigeonly sends letters and photos to Marcy from your phone with P.O. Box 3600 and the DIN already in place, which is the part of keeping in touch a deposit was never going to cover.

6 of 10 questions

Q

How do I send money to someone at Marcy Correctional Facility?

Through JPay. A money order or check with a JPay deposit slip, posted to PO Box 531190, Miami, FL 33153, is free and takes up to $999.99. Online, the JPay app and the phone cost $1.75 to $4.75 and take $2 to $300 at a time.

Send Money
Q

Does the money go to Marcy?

No. Deposits go to a JPay lockbox in Miami and are matched to the DIN, so the P.O. Box 3600 and P.O. Box 5000 confusion on Old River Road affects letters only, never deposits.

Send Money
Q

Which routes are free?

Two. A money order or check posted with a deposit slip, and the visitor lockbox inside Marcy on a visit day. Both are slower than paying a fee.

Send Money
Q

How much cash can I leave when I visit?

$50 a day in total in the visitor lockbox, however many visitors there are. It is not $50 each, so three adults arriving together still leave $50 between them. The lockbox also takes money orders and checks, with no fee.

Send Money
Q

What is the maximum I can send at once?

$999.99 per money order or check by post. Online, app and phone deposits take $2 to $300 at a time. The visitor lockbox is capped at $50 cash a day in total.

Send Money
Q

Do I need the deposit slip?

Yes. Without it a money order arrives with nothing to tie it to a person. The slip carries the DIN, and that is what the deposit is matched against. DOCCS publishes it in English and Spanish.

Send Money
Q

Can I put a money order in the letter?

No. Mail is opened and inspected specifically for cash, checks and money orders. Enclosing one gets it intercepted and holds up the letter as well.

Send Money
Q

What can they spend it on?

Commissary, covering food, coffee, hygiene items, stationery, stamps and over-the-counter basics, plus secure messaging stamps at the kiosks. Calls have been free since August 2025, so the balance is not needed for those.

Send Money
Q

Can I buy a package with the balance?

No, they are separate systems. Packages come directly from an approved vendor by USPS, FedEx or UPS, two non-food a year and three food a month up to 40 pounds combined.

Send Money
Q

What happens to the balance if they transfer?

Nothing. JPay holds the account against the DIN, so it follows the person, not the prison. The mailing address does change, so check the lookup before posting.
